I got a DTAC eSIM at the airport over a year ago and have been using it ever since. I chose DTAC because its counter happened to have the shortest line on the day I happened to arrive.

The DTAC app has an "Order & Activate eSIM" with a variety of options. I have no reason to use that so I don't know whether it's possible to complete the steps outside of Thailand.

I have not measured the speed but it feels at least as fast as what I'm used to at home.

I'm using a DTAC eSIM I got through Airalo. Even though it appeared to be working only for 15 days, it's still usable for almost a year now. Just have to top-up once in a while through the app. Also sometimes using their roaming packages in Asia which I think are reasonably priced. My only concern is what will happen when I change to a new iPhone. And there we have the huge disadvantage of eSIMs. The bit exotic ones you just cannot transfer white a physical SIM you just move over to a new phone and it will work.

I've been through new iPhones with eSIMs more than once. I opt to transfer my old iPhone to my new iPhone and the eSIM "just works" with no drama whatsoever.

That was my experience moving from iPhone 14 to iPhone 15.

I believe that works because the carrier takes some steps to implement it. So while it works with ATT, Verizon, T-mobile, etc., I doubt it works with Airalo and similar.

I haven't had dtac for years, but wife has an AIS e-sim and I have a true-h e-sim. I can move mine from phone to phone and use the true i-service app to top up. (may need to enable the e-sim and roaming long enough to get an OTP first time logging into i-service on a new device). With AIS, we can't move hers (the transfer always fails) so she has to go over to the AIS office to get the e-sim on her new phone when she returns to Thailand. With true-h, the key to moving the e-sim is that the sim (or e-sim) has to be registered, typically using your passport# because it will ask for it during the transfer. Capital One credit cards seem to work ok with the true i-service app.

I recently changed phones and while it failed several times, I was able to eventually moving the AIS e-SIM to work by turning off all networks, removing the physical SIMs, and leaving only the AIS SIM but connected to Wifi. I was able to do the same for 2 different phones. No roaming required. The SMS still comes.

Is there a short term (less than a week) eSim plan someone can recommend for use in Europe? The ability for phone calls would be more important than data, as I can get wifi pretty much everywhere I need to be. Thanks.

Also, have an unlocked phone if swapping physical sim might be cheaper.

I use Airalo eSIM for data. For one week 3GB will cost less than $10. 5GB is usually sufficient for me for a 2 week vacation. Then use GoogleVoice for phone calls. WhatsApp also works well.

I've been using Google Fi, but am thinking of switching to Airalo for data. I could then use Google Voice for phone calls - I almost never call. A problem is that GV won't text to European numbers, but many in Europe use WhatsApp and I suppose I could unpause Fi if necessary. There's cheaper data than Airalo, but Airalo seems to use carriers local to individual countries, while cheaper eSIMs tend to be in a single cheap country, so you end up roaming (slower and sites think you're in, for example, Poland when you're actually in France), and since I use very little data, usually under 1gb/week.

You used to be able to use data on your phone for wifi calling using another SIM, but that seems to have disappeared from Android 14 on my Pixel 8P.

How does that sound?

VZW Business is a pain when traveling. I just switched to them from T-Mobile who has terrible coverage in my local area in the states. My plan was to buy an eSim here in the UK as I have always done and use that data and piggyback VZW on that. Unfortunately, that's not how it works. VZW's suggestion was to live in airplane mode while here. I did follow the guidelines from Airalo here and after doing so I got this popup...



Thought that was good, until several hours of silence I decided to turn on my VZW eSim and see what happens... as expected, a flood of messages came in.

I really need to be in contact all the time, can't jump through hoops turning on/off services to retrieve messages. For the moment, I just cut to the chase and added the international monthly plan ($88.00) Since I'm here another couple weeks, it's cheaper than $10 per day

This may be my best option moving forward, or maybe I can just split off my line from my business account and get the (personal) unlimited ultimate. Most times when here in the UK, I have WiFI access so the reduced data on that plan may suffice.

Other than that it would be beck to T-Mobile or take a look at GoogleFI or AT&T's offerings... (haven't bothered to look)


Am I doing it wrong?

I leave my sim active with data roaming turned off. WiFi calling should be enabled for sending/receiving calls and texts.
