Device Tracking

Anyone know of a good physical device tracker you can affix t a device, preferably with GPS and an audible tone I can request (similar to Find My iPhone)? I have a forgetful son with multiple electronic devices that I want to be able to track down (ex. 3DSxl, Surface, etc.) when he misplaces them.

There are bluetooth trackers which can locate a device within bluetooth range and make a tone upon request via app. One of the well known ones is Tile and they recently updated their basic Tiles to accept a user-replaceable coin battery.

Bluetooth trackers are likely good enough for the house, probably not suitable for luggage tracking due to range limitations. More on luggage trackers here: [Consolidated]: Luggage Tracking Solutions (was: Trakdot to help you track your...)

Tile has a cloud mode that has a chance of finding your lost luggage. With the death of Trakdot and the user-replaceable batteries in Tile I'm going to equip our luggage before our next trip.

I wonder how well that mode works in practice. I presume there would need to be a lot of people using Tile for that to have good enough coverage, no?

Also, in the case of lost luggage at the airport, I'm not sure what the mobile device policies are like at various airports but stuff like Tile might not be much help if they're restrictive.

The cloud location works so long as the phones are powered on and bluetooth is turned on. Being in an area where you're not supposed to use your phone won't stop the detection.

The question is whether the typical airport employee is allowed to have their phones on them at all. I mean, most probably do, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

The LTE-M is limited to US AT&T or S. Korea SK Telecom domestic LTE-M service, though? Good for domestic travel but not international. Also no beep on demand. The battery is only good for up to 10 days per spec, reviews mention about 3.5 days in actual use, and needs to be recharged.

Seems like Samsung SmartThings might be better for home automation with geofencing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZu-fz20meg, tracking fairly visible things which leave the house, or perhaps for domestic business travelers who mostly go by car and want to track car/gear? SmartThings Tracker
