YYZ (Toronto) luggage size scanner?

Not sure which forum this fit in, as it pertains more to luggage size than airlines or technology...

A few days ago, I took my mom to YYZ for her CX (Cathay Pacific) flight, and the agent made us put the tagged luggage through some fancy looking scanner at the check-in counter. Based on the readout, it was scanning the luggage weight and possibly size. It was definitely doing a bunch of laser scanning... possibly to read the barcode tags, but may also be measuring dimensions. I think one of my mom's suitcase was at or just over the 62" linear inch limit, but the machine didn't reject it.

From what i can see, all checked luggage must go through this machine with most/all airlines in Terminal 3...

Any information/experience on these machines?
