I forward my phone to google voice when going abroad. That way the random calls don't come through and cost but I get an immediate notification via text of the call. If I need to I THEN put the phone into APM and call back on WIFI calling. It's a bit of a two step process but I don't get charged really anything or pay for any calls.

AT&T Wifi Calling
Flew Etihad Business from LAX - AUH - MAA and back recently. Few observations on AT&T Wifi Calling.
1. Works great when I put my phone (iPhone 6 Plus) on Airplane Mode and turned on WiFi
2. Worked fantastic on the in flight WiFi on Etihad. Even when flying over international air space. Could make and receive calls no problem.
3. Does not work in Abu Dhabi or anywhere in India for that matter. I did some research and noticed that AT&T indeed does not support WiFi Calling in certain countries and both UAE and India are on that list. https://www.att.com/esupport/article...less/KM1063258
Hope this helps others.

ATT pushes wifi calling around the VPN if it is a native app. I have connectify on my notebook and it worked when I shared a VPNed connection from my Surface to an iPhone and it worked.
