You just reminded me about Hertz' Neverlost, which I didn't pay for but came with the car.

Had to find a restaurant in rainy, dark Kapula Maui. Decided to try the Neverlost. Well, it got us lost and sent us to a hotel about half a mile away.

Turned on Wazey and she got us right to the front door.

We use it on my husband's company phone with unlimited data, but I also checked its usage on my phone and it's not terrible. It is a battery drain.

But it's still cheaper than paying a few hundred dollars for OnStar navigation even if I go over on my data a month or two - or even every month. I'm never even close.

I gave Waze another chance today. We were on a 3 hour trip. I still prefer Google Maps because it was difficult to read the screen while driving with Waze. With Google Maps, a quick glance is all it takes. The notifications on Waze has tiny fonts and requires too much attention while driving. The cops were never where they said they would be either.

since you can't hear Wazey, it makes sense you would wNt clear visuals.

In my case, I want clear verbal instructions because I put the phone on the seat next to me or in the ashtray or compartment. The verbal instructions are very good

I don't understand how some drivers rely on audio alone. Some junctions are so complicated that I would never make the correct turns without seeing the geometry. I've been on interstate interchanges where I needed to stay right, then middle, then left, then right... but the audio instructions the whole time were to simply keep right.

Waze is actually pretty good with that--it always says just what you need to be doing, even if that means several (changing) instructions over the course of a few hundred meters. I do find that it announces turns quite late compared to Google Maps, though--"turn right" immediately before you get to the corner, vs. "in 200 feet, turn right" that you'd get in Google Maps. You do have to keep an eye on Waze's written instructions at times. I have a little bracket that attaches my phone to my dashboard air vents (which I highly recommend) so I can look at it.

I've had no issues with Wazey's directions when not looking at the screen. However, I do understand that some interchanges can be iffy, so I plan on buying an attachment for the car so I can put the phone on the dashboard.

But so far, I haven't had any issues.

This one is what I have and it works amazingly well. The price is aggravating for what is basically 50 cents' worth of plastic, but I've had this device for several years now, through several phones, and it works great and hasn't broken or worn out.

As in the link, it is the Kenu Airframe. (Or do you mean my car? That's an Audi A4.) But the bracket will work for any car that has air vents.

That's a good point. I hear it talking, but have no idea what it's saying. I know that my turn is coming up when it starts saying something. Both are equal for me in that regard.

My problem with Waze, and to a lesser extent Google Maps, is that the rerouting is a little too aggressive on the speeds of minor arterial streets. The side effect is that it tends to want to route me through some pretty sketchy neighborhoods in order to save 30 seconds. That's fine when I'm in Chicago and it wants to route me through North Lawndale, less fine when I'm in another city.

I agree. Yesterday, there was bad traffic from NYC to NJ. Waze tried to route us through Staten Island, costing us about $15 more in tolls, which are already ridiculously high, to save us 15 minutes.

While that is a good amount of time savings, most often the reroutes are to save 5 minutes through smaller streets with more lights. That's why I ignore it most of the time in NYC.

The HOT lanes here in NoVa are great, but I wish Waze had an automated way to ask if I want to take them (and pay for them) in lieu of taking the regular Beltway lanes. Yeah, I know I can tap "Routes" to see the time savings, but when I tell Waze I'm going "home", it would be nice if it automatically gave the time savings for the HOT lanes so I could decide whether the toll is really worthwhile. I can kind of judge that by the toll amount (if it's low, then I can assume that the traffic on the regular lanes isn't that heavy), but it would be nice for Waze to actually show the time savings AND the current HOT lane toll amount.

When I click on "home" I ususally get 2 or 3 different routes with the times, can't you just select the one for the HOT lanes if it's significanly shorter?
