2015 and Later: Favorite Android Apps

I don't use Android anymore, but I do recall liking a wifi network sniffer app. Sadly, iOS doesn't allow such things.

Wi-Fi Sniffers

In the past iOS did allow sniffers, including a great one that would sound a bell tone whenever it connected. It was rock solid. But Apple broke it with an OS upgrade and would not permit any other apps to take its place.

There are quite a few wifi sniffers for Android, just search for sniffer or network in the Play Store.

I've used them to send and receive emails while traveling. Found a hotspot at a touristy temple in New Delhi (evidently from the business office inside), and others in various street locations in Rome, Dubrovnik and Lisbon.

Waze - a combination navigation/social media app, allows real-time submission of traffic delays.

Clue - for female travellers

It's been around a while, but it's new to me.

I got hooked on "Serial" and had downloaded the MP3s to listen to them in my car. But after I finished the series, I wanted more, and needed a way to get and manage podcasts on my phone. I looked at a number of apps and settled on Doggcatcher. It's very configurable and flexible, supports Chromecast, let's you adjust playback speed, and a whole lot more.

I now have far more interesting things to listen to than time to do it.

I've been using pocket casts to manage podcasts for a couple of years now.

I actually purchased Pocket Casts before settling on Doggcatcher, but within 15 minutes requested a refund. It's ability to manage off-line content was terrible, and I'd already downloaded a couple hundred files I wanted to listen to.

Too bad, because I liked the UI. Doggcatcher has a bit of a learning curve, but I think that's a result of its lengthy feature set.

Using Doggcatcher here also.
Has a few things that could improve but overall pretty good.

MightyText.

I can get all my phone alerts on my computer, and I can use an app in Chrome (or Gmail, or the MightyText website) to type and make my phone send SMS. I never have to type on a phone when I'm on a computer, which is good because as a long time (and I mean long time) Blackberry user, I HATE typing on touchscreens.

Pushbullet. Notifications are synced across devices and I can respond to or even initiate text messages from any device (phone, tablet, PC). Now it's also easy to send links and files to all connected devices.

Started using Google Keep recently and am liking it so far. Plus it can be installed on a desktop through Chrome Apps making sync across devices possible.

MX Player and Tunein are my required apps for my commute. Haven't tried them on a plane yet, but would be interested to see how well they work.

Putting another good word in for Pushbullet. Also, anyone else gotten hooked on Pocket Planes? It's always good to have a game or two to get you through the airport, and I liked the flying theme.
