Wi-Fi Sniffers

In the past iOS did allow sniffers, including a great one that would sound a bell tone whenever it connected. It was rock solid. But Apple broke it with an OS upgrade and would not permit any other apps to take its place.

There are quite a few wifi sniffers for Android, just search for sniffer or network in the Play Store.

I've used them to send and receive emails while traveling. Found a hotspot at a touristy temple in New Delhi (evidently from the business office inside), and others in various street locations in Rome, Dubrovnik and Lisbon.
