On some much older GSM phones one has to specify or manually select between 850/1900 and 900/1800, may be this is the case on this newer phone. Or may be it's not set to auto, and it's set on the 900/1800 only bands. It's either that, or there is some incorrect information out there about the bands it supports. It's not common that a dual sim version of a phone include more bands than the non-dual sim version. Usually the only difference is in the dual-sim functionality.

And yet, the phone does not work here in the U.S. (perfectly last week in Europe, just not here) ???

I tried calling Nokia today but the recording says their service only works Mon-Fri so I will wait and call them then.

Well, I guess got off the phone with Nokia and they said the phone is only dual band for Europe----that despite the store's reassurance and Nokia's own website that shows the phone is quad band and should work in the US, too. Can you say, I have been robbed!!!

If you only want 2G (talk/text) then you can buy a dual-sim GSM quad-band phone from the big auction site for ~25 dollars. Blu makes decent phones, but support and accessories are somewhat hard to come by.

Yep! I suspected this would be the case. Even the Nokia site lists it as quadband. However, there are some other sites that list it as dual band. Take a screen shot of the website, while it's still listed incorrectly, and see if you can get a refund.

Nokia also makes (or used to) region-specific models with different frequencies. For example, my old trusty 6230 (GSM 900/1800/1900) was actually a 6230b (GSM 850/1800/1900) but the label only said "6230".
