iOS 8 Continuity as a Roaming Tool

iOS8 permits you to share text messaging, phone calls, etc. between two iOS devices. I'm wondering if this means that you can leave your home SIM in an old iPhone and receive your calls and text messages on a second iPhone with a foreign SIM card in it.

Probably. I get iMessages on an iPhone 5, an iPad Air and an iPhone Mini (all with different SIMS) as well as all of my Macs.

iMessages are different than regular texts.

Oops, of course. I didn't read the OP carefully enough. Sorry.

With Continuity, this feature set will get extended to to traditional SMS/text message and standard cellular voice calls. During the keynote, you saw samples of calls and text being answered on Macs and iPads and they were clear this was not iMessages or Facetime calls. They referred to the text messages as our "green bulb" friends denoting classic text messages.

Their hypo, however, implied where your phone was charging in the bedroom and you were on the deck with your iPad. I'm wondering if I can extend the principle to places where your iPhone is a continent away.

We may need to wait until September to figure that one out.

Thanks, that would be awesome. In thinking of how it works with iMessage, it is linked to the Apple account. I don't see why (or for that matter how) they would do it differently with other traffic, so it might very well behave the same.

What I am not sure is whether they are going to use the internet, wifi, or Bluetooth LE to pull this off.

As of right now... no. The phone needs to be running with the sim in it and needs to be on the same wifi as the second device.

With continuity, it's really a relay service. I thought the protocol was to use Bluetooth LE and not wifi (hence the cutoff of functionality to mac laptops later than mid 2011 and the new mac pro only) so, I don't think leaving the device at home is going to work.

That's amazing to receive them on a device Apple hasn't even announced.

You have no idea who you are talking to!

Other than someone who owns an iPad mini and can't type well.

I saw an iPhone Mini at Mongkok. It was dual SIMMed running KitKat and full of "genuine" Apple logos.

Ah too bad. I was hoping you were the same apple employee who lost an unannounced iPhone at the bar. Id love a smaller phone. I guess I'm the only person who is not excited by the phablet trend.

I too tend to like smaller phones, but alas, that isn't the trend. I posted on another thread that I want to be able to do everything over Bluetooth by voice and listening. A really small device would be ideal for me. I can put my iPad mini in my hip pocket when I need it.

The rumors are the new iPhone 5x/6/??? will be delivered in two versions, one with a larger screen, and the other with a very larger screen...
