You can't bring your equipment - you have to buy theirs on a payment plan if you want them to reimburse for the contract with the previous carrier.

They claim it's not a contract, but it's basically a contract with them.

That seems like a change from how it was a while back. Can you nt just buy a really cheap device from them and stick your SIM card into something else?

It's a good thought, but I'd also be required to trade-in an eligible device. Or, in my case, four eligible devices.

I suppose I could buy four junkers on eBay, trade those in, get four new pieces of junk and sell those on eBay.

Frankly, I'll probably just wait it out with AT&T, or get close enough that the remaining fees aren't too painful.

Instead of the nonsense with T-Mo, I'd rather just get locked into them for a period of time (six months? a year?) for them to pay the early term fees, and have no equipment interaction with them at all.

I just added the 300MB one-time option today. It's my trip since the new plans were introduced. I like that they give you the option to select the exact date you want it to start. It then ends 30 days after that.

One thing I didn't see was the discounted option if you go over. Previously, when I selected the 300MB option (back in the monthly option days), if I went over the 300MB, additional data was charged in increments of 120MB IIRC.

Now the disclosure seems to indicate a standard per MB rate.

Anyone have any insight?

Right, but the per MB rate is the same as you paid for the 300 MB. It's $0.20 per MB, which, if you were to use another 300 MB, is another $60.

So it's actually not a bad deal. Once you pass 300 MB, you only pay for what you actually use.

IT is not perfect, but I much prefer it to the old way.

Especially if I have a trip that spans 2 billing periods, but is less than 30 days. I buy it once and am done.

Also, I bought the 120 plan, but they said I can call and move it to 300 if I go over.

Honestly, the unlimited texting is going to be the most useful for me, as it is how I keep in touch with the family.

Yeah. Unless your trip is over 30 days, you only need to buy it once and done. I don't think my work will let me take off 30 days anyway! The only thing missing is that you don't get to take advantage if the trip is right between your billing period and you get the extra data for free.. sort of.

I think the unlimited txting is great. Now I am seriously considering using it for my next trip. The $60 plan seems good as it is basically $20 per 100MB unlimited and $0.50/min voice if I really have to make a call.

Much, much worse for me. Went to Tokyo for the weekend in September. Data was $8 for 300 MB.

In October, it was $60 for the same 300 MB. I don't really text outside of the iMessage community, so that didn't really help.

It must be during the last few days of your billing period in September?

No - I just turned it on the day I left, and turned it off the day I returned. Under the old system, the pro-rated the month dollars-wise, but gave you the full allotment data-wise.

That didn't work for me last time, they charged the full month for both billing periods for a 2 week trip that spanned my bill date, even though I turned it off on return, which is why I like the new plan better. And having two teenagers back at home... well let's just say texting is good.

Sounds like your trip was after the plan change then, no?

Yeah - same teenager situation for me, but with iPhones, it's all really data.

Bundling data, text, and WiFi is more convenient for me, but the pro-rated scenario was a better deal.

Anyone tried to actually use AT&T's int'l WiFi hotspots? They require an app that doesn't work well (judging from the iPhone reviews at least) to connect to hotspots that are hard to find and only in the major cities.
