Firefox extension to totally block a website

I've hit stuff that spawns popups despite all the defenses being in place.

What I would like is an extension that allows me to add domains to a list of sites I never want to see. Of course I could use the hosts file to get rid of the offending domains but that would still leave an empty window, I would prefer that the window never appear in the first place.

Strangely enough I can find no extension that does this. I'm sure I'm not the only person annoyed by persistent popups.

In Firefox, I use the ....... Plus extension with the ....... Plus Pop-up Addon (primarily to deal with the inane Roomkey.com pop-ups).

NB: There is a momentary flash as the ABP Pop-up Addon closes the window, but it does work.

BlockSite is an extension, which automagically blocks websites of your choice. Additionally, this extension will disable all hyperlinks to these websites, by just displaying the link text without the clicking functionality.

I wish it worked in my case.

I've found ....... Plus (and the Pop-up Addon) to be generally reliable, but if you like, I can take a look at the specific site that's causing the problem.

If ....... plus isn't working (i.e., you're still getting popups) then you likely have a malware infestation. Download MalwareBytes as well as AdAware, and scan your computer.

Malwarebytes free version ASAP. Then get the pro version for $15 only: http://slickdeals.net/f/6751626-malw...ing-newegg-com

Last resort: reformat and reload windows!

It's not an infestation, it's a site that's figured out how to beat them.

Hmmm, do you just have ....... Plus without any filter? You will need to add filters in order for it to update to fight against sites that detected Ad Block Plus. I have Easylist and a bunch of other filters to kill the popups from Chinese websites. For example, CBS just find a way to detect ....... Plus last week, and today I updated my filters and CBS is back without commercials again!

And for the popups that it does not block, you could right click and manually add it to the filter. It works well for the sites that you visit often.. you just need to do it once and they will never pop up again.

I just went back to verify that the offender was in the list--looks like how they beat it was changing their domain name (.com -> .net). Hopefully it's now dead.

That finally did it. The browser flashed but the offending window didn't open.

If you switch popups to only show in new tabs (requires a bit of about:config editing, or using the Tab Mix Plus extension) this eliminates some of the more obtrusive flashing.

Has the added bonus of keeping windows tidy -- although it's a matter of taste, I prefer even having wanted pop-ups going to new tabs rather than whole new windows.

NoScript can be very, very handy for these things, although I find it necessary to run it in blacklist-only mode (whitelist would be more secure, but is too intrusive.)
