As pointed out, some older packs only charge at 5V/1A so that's pretty slow. Most modern packs can take 5V/2A (10W) which helps, but I'd recommend looking at something that supports USB-C PD (such as this RAVPower) which can charge at 15V/1.5A (30W), very quick! Anker is apparently coming out with a similar USB PD pack as well.

I wish they would. That RAVPower has been out of stock for a while. The Anker 20100 USB-C supposedly does USB PD, but it doesn't handle the same output. Those of us with the Nintendo Switch are currently wishing for more proven options to make sure the switch lasts on those long flights. :)

I was lucky to get that RAVPower ordered a few weeks ago with a discount code when it became available again for a very brief period, I received it just a few days ago and it works perfectly to charge my Nintendo Switch (drawing around 22W undocked at ~15V/1.5A). FWIW, the Switch will maintain and even very slowly charge while playing Zelda undocked using a standard 5V/1.5A charge (which unfortunately is the max it pulls at 5V) so you can just use a standard USB portable battery with a USB-A to USB-C cable.

With the rumor a few weeks ago of the next iPhone potentially switching to USB-C (which seems to mean that they're not actually replacing the Lightning port but just the USB-A end of the charging cable to USB-C), Anker would do well to get some new USB PD battery packs out in the market.

Going on a three-day camping trip in August for the total solar ecplise. While we will be in civilization with access to the Casper (WY) Rec Center, I feel that power outlets will be difficult to come across.

To help mitigate that, I started looking for a large battery pack (20k) with Quick Charge input (output is much more common, but not a necessity for me) and four outputs.

This one seems to get great reviews... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M31LX2P?ref=emc_b_5_t

You should also look into battery packs that offer dual input charging (such as https://www.amazon.com/Anker-PowerCo.../dp/B01JIWQPMW) or USB-C charging (such as https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LRQDAEI).

Do these have a shelf life if not used ?

I bought a couple Jump and Go battery jumper boxes ,
they sat around a 12-18 months and when I tried to charge them they would not charge from the included chargers , and customer service was no help

so I was wondering if all the other lithium battery packs also need to be recharged every few months ???

The basic problem is the charge controller that protects the Li-Ion pack. Unfortunately, many of them treat no data as don't charge and thus brick the pack if it's ever allowed to fully discharge. It's cheaper to build them that way so you see plenty that that happens to. (Note that running the pack to zero isn't a problem, there's still a bit of energy there.)

I think there's also a problem with the charge controllers using too much power to preserve their memory. I've seen packs discharge themselves far faster than the self-discharge time of Li-Ion. Unfortunately, this means my seldom-used Li-Ion packs have to sit on a charger. Grrrr!!!

Question for the experts: Are there any really small power banks out there which allow for USB type-C charging? (Right now, needing it for my N5X.)

By really small, I mean compact dimensions and 3000-5000 mAh or so.

I just did a search on Amazon for "battery pack usb-c 5000".

https://www.amazon.com/AUKEY-5000mAh.../dp/B01NAH6KLB

Kind of pricey, though.

I prefer the Anker version of the product.

EDIT: never mind, missed the fact that the Aukey is USB-C

is there a limit on mAh size that is allowed in your carryon bag ?

I would hate to have an expensive battery pack "liberated" at security ,

and the same thing is having one of the cheap , mis-marked (too high) battery pack that says 30,000 mAh on the case and is really 10,000 mAh

I have gone for a couple of cheap and thin sub 4000 mah packs to avoid all the ban nonsense

I have a barely legal pack and have the same fears that you do. I don't particularly trust the Trump Administration, but I suspect that terrorists have had or are nearing some "breakthrough moment" with their bombs.

While I am not sure that they can make a reloaded iPad work, I have little doubt that they could make a little LED on a power bank flash just fine. Also with all the iPhone repair shops run by guys out of cubicles or shoebox size stores, I have little doubt that they could get someone who could put the rigged device back together without overt signs of tampering.

The limit is 100 Wh. Which, for the typical 5V USB chargers, is 20 Ah. (20,000 mAh)
