I Still have a T-Mob that I have kept and top up for US $3/day usage, no fee to keep account/number active except for the top up every 180 or 365 day depending on amount.
I also have a North America wide unlimited plan with intl sms with my Canadian domicile carrier. The T-Mob is for whoever is travelling with me to pop into their phone.

Looks like the best option would be signing up for something like Ultra Mobile or H2O Wireless for each individual trip, and ordering a new SIM each time. Seems a bit of hassle though would save money in the long-term.

Very true.
A solution could be the Toggle SIM, which offers a temporary US number* at no charge for one month or a permanent US number for £5 a year. I have this as well as a permanent Swiss mobile number. Calls between Toggle countries are mainly at 3p/minute. It's more expensive than Three Feel Like Home for data but does offer data packages.
* Check the website for details including the necessary procedure. www.togglemobile.com

There are many apps out there that will give you a free US telephone number. Text Free / Pinger is one of them (I use this, works flawlessly, and works on Three data when abroad in the US); talkatone is another.

The caveat is that they use T-Mobile towers, so if you travel the backroads of the US, I would probably search for something else.

Do I understand this correctly?
As long as there's no use, there's no cost.
Each time I topup, I renew the line for another X time (so as long as I add $10 every 2 months, I'm fine)?

Hi! I will be landing in LAX on May 19 and will be in the States for 3 weeks and will be traveling to Grand Canyon, San Fran and New York before returning home.
If I plan to get a $60 monthly plan from ATT, where is the best place I can pick it up? I will be staying at W Westwood in LA for the first 2 nights.
Thanks

Target's Brightspot Mobile is getting pulled probably. It was a cheap way for monthly Tmobile service.

And anyone coming for a week, seems like the best deal - $29 gives unlimited call/SMS domestic and in essence, international, as well as 1GB data.

Part of our navigation was done using offline maps previously downloaded, although it's a real simple drive on our day long drive back out toward LA - once we picked up T-Mo's Edge signal, we're good to resume live NAV buzzing along just around the post 70 MPH speed limit.
For short stay visitors, I would lean toward suggesting sticking with AT&T (and its MNVO partners) towers & signals, the cost difference is minimal but the data coverage will be better to Arizona. Otherwise, T-Mo's 4G LTE signal in big cities is quite fast.

I'm still with T-Mobile, but leaning towards Ultra Mobile for just that reason. Even if it means needing a new SIM card each time, which would be annoying, still seems the best option.
And anyone coming for a week, seems like the best deal - $29 gives unlimited call/SMS domestic and in essence, international, as well as 1GB data.

That means that I don't even need to order a new SIM for each trip. Load $29, have it, after the month ends (don't do full months anyways), let it suspend, and reactivate online before flying again. Sure, new number each time, but again, with GV, shouldn't be a problem.

I am from Norway, and going to California for four weeks this summer, and have been looking for a provider of a prepaid sim, with UNLIMITED use of 3G/4G. I dont find any with unlimited, only up to 10GB.
Anyone who knows a company that provide prepaid, unlimited use of 3G/4G?
I do have an iphone 6
I actually just found a website that say that T-Mobile is the only one that provide this ($80)
