Using Iphone ATT Guam to US and back
I am going to Guam for 6 weeks for work and have been trying to figure out an inexpensive way to stay in phone contact with my husband and son who will remain in the continental US. We have a family plan with AT&T and all have Iphones. They will provide me an Iphone in Guam with a Guam local carrier but I will still get stuck with international roaming charges correct? Also my husband and son will get charged as well? My husband is computer illiterate and my son has virtually no internet service. I am going to the AT&T store tomorrow but I don't necessarily want "their" solution. I have been reading about sim cards but am still confused. Do we all have to get one and will it work with Iphones?

Many Guam providers have cheap add-ons for calling the US. If the company you are working with is a Guam branch of a US company, it might already be on the phone. In the other direction sign up for a Callcentric.com. They will give you a free New York line with call forwarding to Guam for $0.027 a minute. Forward your US cell to Callcentric and forward Callcentric to the Guam number once it is assigned. During the gap before your Guam phone is assigned, Callcentric has free voicemail which will email you the messages.
If your iPhone doesn't have US calling, Rebtel.com's calling card app will call the US for 1.5 cents a minute.

Here is what they told me at the AT&T store. Anyone in the US with AT&T can call Guam, no extra charges, since it is a US territory. From Guam though I cannot use my AT&T Iphone. So I will call home on my Guam cell phone and my family and friends (with AT&T) will call my Guam phone. I will leave my AT&T Iphone off with a message telling people to call or text my Guam number or email me if they need to get a hold of me. Thanks for the above info though.

Remember that you can use a texting service like Whatsapp to text your friends in the US (or other countries) solely over data for free. They are right about Guam being an included call on ATT. I'm pleasantly surprised but just researched it myself.

Dang I need to switch to ATT. Verizon charges me .35/minute to call Guam, which I do often. Plus while there I get dinged with international roaming for calls and data which is around $100 for the two weeks I'm there.

ATT includes calling to Guam. It does not include calling from Guam, texting from Guam, or using data in Guam. Guam is $2 a minute to use an ATT phone in:
http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/po..._countries.jsp
It is eligible for the $30 for 120 megs of data deal. I would just stick with Verizon and get a calling card to call Guam. As noted above, you can call Guam via a calling card for a penny a minute.
ATT told the lady that calling any US territory is included and ATT is a US territory. Then they treat it as a foreign country for roaming. On the CDMA side, Verizon is $0.70 a minute:
http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/po..._countries.jsp
Guam has a surprising number of carriers. You'd think ATT could negotiate a better deal. The problem is that Guam is not "copy paper" (e.g. the supply that office supply stores all compete on), it is the obscure item where no one is invested and it is special order.
As a comparison, here is a link to DoCoMo's prepaid plan for Guam:

Since Guam is free for your ATT plan, why not forward your US phone number (your iPhone) to your Guam number? Dont have to worry about the message and people still can reach you (although you may end up with calls at random times in Guam, but thats what the Do Not Disturb feature in iOS is for)

Just for completeness, the above isn't true for all US territories, at least for the "roaming" part - Peurto Rico (also a US territory) is treated a part of the US by AT&T, and thus there are no additional charges for "roaming" or using data there.

I don't think ATT has been classified as a US territory yet - I think you probably meant to say Guam is a US territory!

The US Virgin Islands are also not roaming.
With respect to the original poster, remember that if you have iOS6 and do not disturb, the caller can optionallly ring through in an emergency by calling more than once in under two minutes. You can also create a category of numbers that can ring through:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/09...turb-in-ios-6/
Just remember they can also ring through during an important meeting and they may not know you are in such a meeting, e.g. they will not be exercising judgment. I recommend not allowing them to ring through, but allowing them to ring through with multiple rings.
It is too bad that you can't stack the options, e.g. only allow people in my family group to ring through if they call more than once.

AT&T Guam Update
I thought I’d try to to refresh this old thread for current (2021) information.
Does AT&T Provide wireless phone service in Guam now? Do I have to purchase a International Day Pass or another AT&T Int’l plan to get low cost service?
The AT&T website states that their International Day Pass works in Guam but they also state the following footnote: “ Off-net voice service*” & “Off-net voice service, coverage details not available*”. Neither of these comments could be explained to me by customer service on the phone or online. Various searches bring up info that is pretty old.
I am aware of the other options in Guam to purchase local SIM cards for wireless service.
Anyone have recent info?
Thanks

The current iPhone Do Not Disturb feature has options that include allowing certain persons access and also all Favorites in your contact list. Look for it under the "Focus" heading in Settings.
