Hurricane Sandy And Technology

A few questions which may seem very dumb to the true geeks among us.

1. Why is Verizon email intermittent today whether using Verizon, VZW or Virgin broadband as an ISP?

2. Why are various websites, e.g. FT, also intermittent?

3. Why can't I connect to some iPhone apps including the App Store?

I thought I had two back up systems just for days like today.

Sounds like your local connectivity has some issues. Are you using a cell phone or other 3G service, or a wireless connected to a landline?

Are you in New York City right now? Cell sites can be disrupted by wind, and a problem at one station can create problems in many areas if wireless is used for backhaul

I've been browsing FT all day, and I was just using the App Store a few minutes ago--both work fine. However, I'm connecting using a cable modem (also in NYC), so perhaps that can help narrow it down

I am in Brooklyn.

I can use any of the following:

Verizon DSL;

Verizon Wireless iPhone; or

Virgin Mobile 3G broadband card.

The DSL probably has the best chance. If your local circuit is up, there shouldn't be any downtream problems. Did you try the App Store through that?

Verizon and Virgin (Sprint) are both CDMA. Although they're different networks, it's possible some problems can affect both of them at the same time (I'm thinking of signal propogation problems in this case)

And there's simply a matter of network congestion. Everyone's streaming the Weather channel, etc.

Verizon has announced that their landline central offices in parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn are down.
