I've got an HTC Evo 32gb 4G & I paid around $200. It's a solid little machine. There's lotsa deals out there though (like this one:http://stores.bestbuy.com/2505/open-...0001312479598/). Check the deals websites (Dealsucker, Slickdeals, Fat Wallet etc).

7-inch tablet recommendations

I have several iPads, had an original galaxy tab, and have the nexus 7. If you want an android tablet, I'd go with the nexus 7.

+1 on the Nexus 7. Rooted mine on day 1 because I didn't like all the spam on the home screen (and I'm a nerd). Fast, smooth, and good on battery. Google nailed the sub $200 tablet. I bought this to replace a Samsung GT 10.1 that I lost. I've been extremely happy with it. Only thing I really miss is that the DL app doesn't work on JB yet...

Some of the negatives about N7 on here are silly: No front camera (who actually uses a tablet to take pictures?), portrait by default (easily changeable with any of the custom ROMs out there), crappy speakers (headphones). Most of these things (as well as no vibration) were intentionally left out to cut costs.

What SPAM? There is nothing but just a few widgets that could be removed without rooting it

Not a JB limitation, it just hasn't been released for the Nexus 7, as I have it for my GNEX that is running JB

And I agree, never understood why people carry their iPads, and start taking pictures, like it looks cool or something. It's a crappy camera, if you are going to take something that bulky, might as well carry a full size SLR

That was one of the considerations that drove me to originally purchase the GT2. But after using it for a couple weeks, I realized that I was never going to use the front camera.

After mentioning it earlier, I just saw someone walking around with their iPad (or some other 10" -- was in a case) using it continuously as a video camera earlier this evening... in a busy tourist district. Was really hoping they'd get walk into a local and get their iPad smashed, but no such luck in the minute or two I had to observe the idiocy.

Custom ROMs are a pain in the neck, unless you really need them (especially now that CarrierIQ is dead.)

Although I have no plans on changing the ROM on the Nexus for some time, I don't agree that custom ROMs are hard. Every time I changed the phone ROM was a week of hand-wringing and trying to find time, and then twenty minutes of flashing and re-setting up the phone. The process itself is mostly painless now, especially with something like Cyanogen.

Now picking a good launcher is a whole other story, but probably suited for another topic.

Actually, I'm up for that topic. More than happy to address it in this thread, too. Being new to Android, I'm on my second launcher and I would really like to know what's out there.

And that will probably make me wait a bit and see what happens.

Finding a decent one, and then keeping up on updates (vs. just getting them over the air) is a non-trivial, and these days largely unnecessary effort for me/to my mind. I even moved back on my Epic; GB is good enough that I don't feel the need to monkey with ICS on it.

That might be different if the Epic were well-supported by Cyanogen or another actively-maintained community ROM rather than having to rely on ones by individual maintainers, but CDMA is often a bit of an unwelcome stepchild.

Meanwhile, I can't see anything lacking or which I'd want to change on the GT2.

The TouchWiz launcher that came with the GT2 is pretty good for ICS. On Gingerbread, I prefer LauncherPro (and used it with ICS on the TouchPad, when I had it.)
