Store video to cloud, watch on ipad?
What's the best way to store a movie in the cloud, then watch it on an ipad (2nd generation)? Both streaming over wifi and download to ipad for offline viewing, preferably without using itunes. This would be owned DVDs encoded with handbrake, if that matters.

Set up your own 'cloud' server.
Use one of the dozens of commercially available 'cloud' web services.
Always comes down to $, are you will to pay $$$ for commercial hosting or $ for DIY hosting?
For the DIY route check out Plex Server and go from there.
Commercial route, ehhhh to $$$ IMHO

I was looking for something free. The main issue is that I don't know which of dropbox, sugarsync, google drive, etc., etc. have ipad apps with good video players. All of these have sufficient storage capacity for my needs.

DB,SS both have apps that will sync up contents(download to your iDevice) and you use your own media player of choice. I suppose you could access your acct. via a web browser and attempt to stream it, again it would use what ever your device is set to handle that type of file.

Streaming would be nice, given the time it would take to download a 1gb file if nothing else. The last time I tried streaming on an i-device, it wanted flash.

I've tried the dropbox route, it was terrible at best (for anything more than a small video clip)
To stream movies to my ipad my preferred solution is AirVideo - particularly since it can do offline encoding so I can take advantage of the native h264 capabilities.
For downloading a video from any web server and watching it later I like Azul (it can play most formats), I haven't used this feature but it is supposed to be able to play the file while downloading (as if it was streaming).

I suppose I should try some downloading alternatives (I could then use the native player) and streaming alternatives. Are there other good download (and erase from ipad) apps?

The most useful solution would be to run a VPS or home Plex server, which would then let you stream very well.
If you have a Mac at home running that's the simplest. The VPS would cost maybe $20 a month, but be the most fully "cloud based" thing you could do.

Even with a dedicated server, what are you going to use on the ipad to
- watch streaming movies
- download the movie and, after watching with the stock player, delete the movie to free up space
Some DIY server software has a dedicated app.
I continue to prefer something like DB, SS, GD rather than running my own server. If nothing else, my ISP upload speed is slow and renting a commercial server is way beyond my needs. Why use a commercial server at $20/month when I could get Netflix for $8/month? An existing cloud service and free software would be ideal.
