Polarity on power tips

The power tip on my netbook had become very temperamental. SO I took it apart. I did not not polarity of the tip. Is polarity standradised or does it vary from manufacturer to manufacturer?
The netbook I have is MSI U100 series. I do not want to end up with reversed polarity.

No, it's not standard. The label on the netbook should indicate which is positive and which is negative -- see the sample label here.

Thank you. I found it. Now anther question. Which is the live conductor in a coax dc cable. The central conductor or the outer conductor? I I know I could check with a multimeter, but I can't my hand one one right now.

It's usually the central one, but this is not universally adopted; you need to check it.
