As for the "newstand" app I totally agree that it's crap. Especially with the fact that they have a "free" NY Times app-the only one that I saw that I would consider installing- and while it says you can see the top news stories, it doesn't detail that you can't actually read the article. You can ONLY see the headline and ONLY for the top news articles. Additionally, it looks like it only lets you put 11 different apps into the newstand. Why don't they let you put the Economist or WSJ in there?

Actually you can read the articles in the "top news" section without subscribing. Other than that I agree with all your points. Totally half-baked.

Additionally, the reminder location functionality is stupid if you can't type in addresses or choose locations on the map. Seriously, how hard would it have been for apple to allow you to type in addresses or choose map points. Also, I have the iTouch 4 (or whatever the touch with facetime is called) as well as the iphone 4s. The 4s allows me to pick a location for a reminder while the touch only lets me pick a date/time. I'm not sure if this is related to different settings on the device, but I think the customizable settings are pretty much the same. So the location reminder thing either only works with iPhones or it only works on the 4S hardware. Has someone with an iPhone 4 been able to get the location reminder thing working?

IIRC the iTouch doesn't have GPS which would make location-based reminders impossible. No excuse for not allowing them on the iPhone 3GS, though.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; CPU OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

I backed up and installed iOS 5 on my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 this weekend. Also upgraded two notebooks to Lion and hooked all of those plus another notebook to iCloud. No troubles at all. I love the iCloud implementation. I put Keynote or PowerPoint presentations on my iCloud from one of the notebooks and viola, they are on my iPad. This is going to be great for me for moving docs and presentations around.

Aren't permissions up to the publications themselves? And the two publications mentioned are notoriously stingy with those.

I will take your word for it since I really don't know. But what's the downside to allowing users to add those apps to the "Newsstand"? Does Apple take a higher percentage for the app purchases if they are added to the newsstand folder/app?

I upgraded both my 3GS and iPad 1 to iOS5 and so far the only problems I've seen are:

1) I couldn't send emails from the iPhone until I did a power down and restart.

2) Home Sharing works on the iPhone but not the iPad (shared library doesn't show up). I've tried the power down and restart but that didn't work, so the next step is a full restore on the iPad.

Shared library works on my Ipad2 with OS5

Nice to see Apple pull a Microsoft with the "newstand" crapware that can't be deleted and can't be shoved off into a folder like other crapware (youtube, stocks)

You can move newstand in to a folder. Kind of trickey to do so, and you have to be real fast with it, but it can be done.

yes you can, but then it doesn't work and crashes the phone - so even sort of WORSE than microsoft. I'm sure we'll get some work around, folder AND function in a future ios 5 release.

Warning - potential WiFi issues post-upgrade

I upgraded both my iPhone 4 and iPad 1 to iOS 5 a few days ago, and ever since, Wifi connections on corporate APs, those that use WPA Enterprise, etc are very unstable. Frequently won't connect, loses connection, refuses to re-connect, etc.

There are many threads on Apple's discussion forums about it. It may be worth waiting a bit to see if there is a quick patch released to fix this.

FWIW, I can connect to my router at home and my Verizon MiFi 4510L just fine.

It's working now.

The only thing different is that I fully transitioned to iCloud, though that doesn't explain why sharing worked before for the 3GS but not the iPad.

Sort of on the subject of IOS 5, I need two apps I had with the Android phone I just left for the IPhone. These are:

One that shows all of the WiFi networks in my vicinity, such as WiFi Analyzer did on the Android. I understand Apple took these off the site for something to do with wardriving, which I do not do.

The other one is one that shows all of the GPS satellites that are visible along with their signal strength. I understand this may be an API issue.

nope. apple removed them because they used undocumented api calls.
