Jailbreak 4 iOS is out!
Comex has released his jailbreak for all iOS 4 devices including the iPhone 4! I recently signed up to twitter with the express purpose of following the guys working on the jb and unlock for 4iOS.
At 6:08, twitter message: @comex http://jailbreakme.com/
1.Just navigate to above via your iPhone....took about 5 minutes to load cydia.
2. If you're nervous about doing this, read here for 'instructions': http://thebigboss.org/2010/08/01/off...-jailbreak-out
The unlock to follow in about 48 hours. Twitter message: @MuscleNerd - iPhone4 carrier unlock will be pushed after small test period (only @planetbeing and I have been able to test til now!)
More information here:

There is a problem with the jailbreak breaking Facetime and MMS. It appears that if you do a first do a full backup and then restore after the jailbreak, you will fix this minor problem:

Just JB'd my old iPhone 3G and installed ultrasnow on iOS4.0. It was a walk in the park as far as jail breaking goes. This will be nice to have to take on int'l trips. I don't have a SIM to actually test this out at the moment though I am assuming it is working. I think I will have to find a Tmobile card on the web this week.

If you have a 3g, you can use the other method, which is probably better for you.
BTW, there's still problems reported with the 3g running 4.x, so I'm not upgrading yet.

With the stamp of approval from the US Government, I'm sure the Dev Team is quite happy
However, I'm concerned with their avenue of attack...Safari. There is apparently some flaw in iOS's Safari that allows for arbitrary code execution on the local machine (as root?haven't really been keeping up with the JB scene)...remember that guy that rickrolled jailbroken iOS devices that had the SSH server set to the default password? iOS is a huge target nowadays(for a mobile device that is) and I hope the dev team patched the hole that they tunneled in through...
But kudos to the Dev Team;they're geniuses and darned heroes in my book for sticking it to Steve Jobs's Walled Garden.

However, according to above site, if you're 3Gs is running the newer boot loader, i.e. 359.3.2, then you can jb but not unlock.
I'm trying to get clarification and appreciate if anyone can help with this?
Update: carrier unlock works -jailbreakmatrix.com apparently hasn't updated their site as jb was only released last night. Another happy camper here....the entire process took less than a few minutes and painless.

The site says it was updated today at 1:25PM EDT, but it still says no unlock for the newest bootloader on the 3gs. But you are right in that the top post on the dev team blog doesn't distinguish between boot loader versions for 3g/3gs.

I just JB'd my iphone 4 running 4.0.1. My 3GS was already done for a while now on 4.0. Ultrasnow will unlock any 3GS on 4.0 or earlier. Maybe 4.0.1 too, but I'm not sure about that.
The unlock for the Iphone 4 is due in less than 48 hours.
And make SURE to save your SHSH blobs!!!!!! It's already too late for 4.0 if you didn't do it. But you can do it for 4.0.1 now.

Okay.
I wonder if the gurus can help.
I have iPhone running 3.1.2
iTunes 9.1.1.12
I jailbroke (jailbreaked?) my 3.0 using Blackra1n
I would really like a couple of the features of the 4.0 operating system.
I backed up my phone to iTunes last night.
So..... Is this what I need to do:
a) allow iTunes to update my phone to 4.0
b) then run jailbreakme.com ?
I'm on AT&T and have no need to unlock

cblaisd, you have an iphone 3g?
You might need itunes 9.2. Anyway, take a backup and let it restore to 4.0.1.
Then, when it's back up, open safari and go to jalbreakme.com
But, with the 3g, there are some reports of problems with iOS 4.x, so you might want to wait. Apple acknowledged it is investigating.
If you have the 3gs, it's basically the same process.
