UMTS freq.

Couldn't quite find it.

The iPhone 3GS had which UMTS frequencies?

The iPhone 4 will have which UMTS frequencies?

And where do I see which countries and providers use which UMTS frequencies?

Thanks!

I think it's all about the total user experience. Heck, even Intel is now saying clock speed isn't the only spec. If the iPhone had software designed completely by engineers we might as well be using Symbian. <gag> :p

Exactly. It is integration and total product. A fast CPU with a bad UI is useless. Well, you did mention Symbian ;)

Before I was typing 3G bands and getting the wrong hits.

Thanks though. Much appreciated.

Thanks for spotting that.

I guess this means that the new firmware will be out by then?

Next question, when will it be jailbroken. :)

With multitasking and other features in iOS4, what are the other features which will only be available via jailbreaking?

Sounds like tethering is the main one and widgets in the lock screen are another.

But have they been able to unlock the 3GS so you can use any SIMs on them?

There are plenty of applications that you cannot use unless you jailbreak. BiteSMS is the most valuable and money-saving one for me. And StumblerPlus is a very useful app for my work.

And yes my 3GS is unlocked for any SIM.

Tethering will be available for a cost without jailbreaking. Widgets in the lock screen? Doesn't seem like that would be worth it, to me.

Actually, what might discourage tethering more is AT&T's new data plans.

But if you could unlock and use the affordable SIMs in countries like Italy, that might be a very useful feature to have.

Not to mention being able to use the iPhone overseas, with various GPS and travel apps.

There are lots of other things... I can customize themes, wallpapers for springboard and lockscreen, rotating wallpapers, 5 icons on your dock, etc. as far as aesthetics go. Also, I can hide icons for apps I don't use much, like iTunes, compass, calculator, and the native stocks app. Obviously iOS4 will have folders so one could technically dump all of these into one or two 'junk' folders :p. I also can use my phone as a temporary hard drive when I jail-break it, in that I can store files on its hard drive. Essentially, like a large flash drive.

This is just scratching the surface, though. There are lots of others, like an app that lets you control/manage torrents remotely, an app that allows you to basically firewall your phone (selectively block/open ports), an app that lets you run wifi-dependent programs on 3G, an app that lets you blacklist phone numbers, an app that downloads youtube videos, etc.

Allegedly, iOS4 has already been jailbroken and unlocked (in the beta form anyway).

Right. People have to remember than an IPhone is simply a computer. You can do whatever you want with it. You could even wipe it clean and boot Linux up on it if you wanted. Some people have done that and loaded Android on their iPhones.

What is the difference if I buy a laptop or an iPhone? I can load whatever I want on a laptop, why not an iPhone? The claim is that since there is a GSM telephone hardware/software set in the iPhone that Apple cannot let us have full control. That is just nonsense. Apple can absolve themselves with a bunch of fine print legal disclaimers and let us screw up our iPhones any way we want. But Apple really wants to keep it locked so they can lock their customers in ITunes and money-making applications. I prefer more freedom in my computing.

You're talking about Orange, right? Wait 'til I finish my expresso and then we'll see.

Now, you want everything. ;)

Did you see the section on the website where they will sell you a locked 3GS for Mobicarte service for a mere 600€? :D

Sean Kovac's Google Voice application is another program which is only available in the jailbroken version.
