Gang,

I am looking to buy a new printer... and would like to get one that has wi-fi so we both can use it without connecting or transferring files.

I do not want to spend alot of money... do not print photos... anyone have any recommendations on a printer they would get?

There is one at Walmart... Lexmark X4650 Wireless All In One Printer. I have never used Lexmark... so not sure of quality... only $59 with free shipping.

I got a wireless HP printer from Costco to use at home (HP 6400 series), I think it was around $100. We have a more expensive HP 8500 series printer at work. Both are wireless and work very well. Both are also more than $59 but remember that you get what you pay for. With printers, the long-term cost is primarily in ink, not in the initial cost of the printer, so be sure to factor that into your calculations.

Look at a cheap laser plus a print server if you don't need color. I got tired of messing with ink and having to run out at the last minute to buy a $35 ink cartridge. I picked up a Brother HL-2140 B&W laser printer at Office Max for about $50. The starter toner lasted me about 9 months. A replacement toner cartridge cost $20 at monoprice and should last twice that.

I don't print much, and if I want to print pictures I send them to Walgreens online. It is not a network printer, but you should be able to get an interface for $40 or so to connect it to your router, either wired or wireless.

I have a Cannon MP620 and I am extremely happy with it.

It is an all in one - printer / scanner / copier - and prints color. It is WiFi and all machines on the network are able to access it, whether the computer is connected by Ethernet Cable or WiFi.

Lexmark printers usually show as the highest cost per page in reviews.

Anybody have any comments about the Brother 2170W (b&w laser) that I've been seeing on sale recently?

I got a Brother HL-2170W and am very pleased with it. Easy to set up and the price was pretty cheap. Also, the quality is excellent.

I have one and like it. Initial setup was via wired connection to activate and configure the wireless and now it works great.

HHHmmmm... sounds like I need to be thinking about a B&W laser... I do so little color printing...

OK.. back to this after a week of busy work...

Does anyone have a specific B&W laser printer that would be wireless/network sharable as well as scanning/copying capability?

I have it and love it. Got my parents one last year to replace an older MFC they had. It doesn't support scan and send to email but does support scan and send to FTP so I use that. I typically scan to pdf and shred most anything I need so this works out well for me. It also does fax, but I don't use it ... my parents do however and are happy with it.

Wired and wirelss (I use wireless) and have no complaints at all. Still on my first toner cartridge after about 15 months of use.

Seconded MFC-7840W

I installed one in my client's home office. It's been there for about 15 months and not a single complaint. The 7840W replaced an inkjet MFC that was using up 1 black ink cartridge per month due to the volume of faxes they receive. It is on its third toner cartridge now.

I guess it really depends on your home set-up, but I have four printers about the place, two of them on the network.

The majority of my printing goes through a B&W laser (Lexmark E320, I suspect long out of production) - though any laser will give you decent quality at a low cost per page.

I have an HP all in one in my office on the network - used mainly for scanning and the occiasional page that must be in colour.

My wife has her own Canon scanner/fax in her workshop, as it was only �15 with rebate and it saves her annoying me printing stuff while I'm on the phone.

We also have another Canon on the network which is given over to the kids and fed on cheap, generic, ink carts.

So..... I guess I'm saying buy a couple of cheap printers and spread them about - one of the colour must have + scans and another laser as a workhorse.

Lexmark machines work well, but the ink is outrageously expensive, and cannot be easily refilled. I became disgusted with paying as much for the ink each time as for the printer itself.

I switched to a Brother 685CW all-in-one with fax and wireless, for which you can get inexpensive ink from amazon, and find it easier to use than the Lexmark, as well as thrifty with ink. There are a number of similar Brother machines that I suggest you check out.


If you still want a lexmark, I have one I'll sell to ya cheap.....
