Upgrade reliability-LCD display or human agent

Whenever I see my name on the upgrade list on a LCD display, I am pleased. I feel that a computer is handling my upgrades. When there is no display and I had to approach a gate agent and request, I feel "inferior" and I feel disappointed by even a legitimate, "many are ahed of you" you don't stand a chance response.
Are display upgrade waitings and "human" interface handled the same way?

Since this question is about airlines' computer systems, it really has nothing to do with the things we discuss here in the Travel Technology forum. No offense intended, Obscure2k, .
