Talkatone - The "holy grail" of smartphones is to find an app that allows you to easily make calls without impacting your regular plan minutes. Basically making calls using data, not minutes. For Android, there used to be a combination of Google Voice, pbxes.org, and CSIPsimple. It was hard to setup, hard to maintain, not completely reliable. Talkatone has simplified things dramatically. No need for a separate SIP app or pbx. Combine Talkatone with a Google Voice number, and you easily can make AND receive calls, and send AND receive text messages. Setup is simple, and it's very stable.

My friend had issues getting it to work on his SGS1. Works well on an LG Optimus though.

There's this application called "Trade Accounting" for Android, don't know whether it is available for iPhone or not. I heard its good for keeping accounts. Mostly aimed at making balance sheets and other statements, but it seems you can keep an austere watch on your expenses when you're abroad with this app. I always wanted such an app because I tend to overspend every time. For me searching for apps is the most boring thing. I just found it today and hope it comes handy during my travels.

Most of the free daily apps on Amazon are games, but today's is something useful - Photo Transfer App.

This morning, a + icon appeared in the notification bar. I had no idea what it was. It lead to a spam ad.
It turns out that some apps install AirPush, a push-notification mobile ad network, on the phone. The ads are dsiplayed through the notification bar.
AirPush Detector is a very small program, around 300 kb, that quickly scanned the phone, identified and removed the app containing AirPush (AroundMe World in my case).

FoxFi does not require rooting. During a 2-hour car trip I enabled FoxFi so my son could play his Nintendo 3DS against remote users. He said it worked flawlessly.

I will start reading the app descriptions more carefully.

It does not require a root, but as stated, might not work on all phones. As for my Epic 4g, it's flawless. I really try to not abuse it and it's only for the times I really need a connection more secure than the open wifi I may be connected to.
