I want to be able to set different profiles which control all settings on the phone: turn different radios (phone, bluetooth, wifi) on/off, establish connections, change alerts (volume, repeats, vibration, etc). And to setup automatic switching based on time, wifi location, etc.

I noticed quite a few on the android marketplace but I would love to get some recommendations.

Thanks.

A lot of people really like Tasker.

The GPS chip inside your Android phone makes it an indispensable tool for your travels. Whether you walk, drive, or fly, there’s a great app for your phone that can help you get around faster.

I'll 2nd the vote for Tasker. Very handy and so many scripts are already on line. I've got it set up so my better half can ping my phone with a particular text message and it sends back my location on Google maps. Really handy especially when I'm driving.

That would be hilarious if it could be programmed to ping back coordinates to a random "adult entertainment venue" in the area.

Ha Ha! I wonder if anyone Foursquare's massage parlors or adult theaters? Let alone their mistresses home...

What happens if you are bumped off as the mayor of your mistresses house? Hilarity...

I have not seen a VPN that connects automatically on an android, but I would also like one. I typically use witopia, but I used Vyprvpn this past week in China since witopia was blocked. The Vyprvpn server in LA was faster than HK and AUS servers and I could stream netflix. PPTP only. Had to manually connect each time.

What Permissions Did I Grant?

Is there an Android app that lets you see the permissions that you've given to all the other apps? In other words, which apps did I install that wanted access to my contacts, or whatever?

Or, is there a way to review this, already built into the phone?

I'm running into an issue where my memory is continually getting used up. I'll delete data or applications only to find my memory low again. Then I cannot receive SMSs, as the phone has not enough space. I find the easy solution is to factory reset the phone and then just re-install everything, but there has to be a better way.

Is there applications that help manage free memory, or at least a way of holding a buffer enough to keep my text messages from being refused? Any ideas welcome....

can you move apps to an SD card? do you not have much memory on your phone?

seanthepilot Jul 10, 2012 6:56 am

Yeah, it's a cheap Acer with only 512MG memory. All apps that can move to SD have already been moved. I don't mind tossing apps that I don't use, as I have everything backed up using AppSaver. The problem is that 2 days after I uninstall them, the memory that I freed up seems to have disappeared again.

Thank you, I will try the one suggested above.

+1 for CamScanner. I use it with drop box, and and have basically eliminated the need to save receipts while on the road any more.

make sure it is turned off until used, it comes turned on by default

I don't know how long it's been available, but SeatGuru is free for Android.

This is YYZ centric, but I love my Transit Now app. Using bus and streetcar GPS it tells you when the next vehicle is getting there. I now spend no more than a minute or so waiting since I just don't bother going to the stop any earlier than I need to. Presumably other cities have similar apps.

Second that, Transit Now is definitely the best of the YYZ transit apps. Pparticularly useful other ones (that I've used) are London Travel and Transport for Ireland Journey Planner.

Dropbox for Android is crippled, but there is an app that un-cripples it. That app is DropSync (after you purchase the $5 Pro key). I'm still trying it out, but it seems to be very good.

The issue is that Dropbox for Android only syncs files one at a time, and only on request. That is very different from the way it works on desktops and laptops, where an entire folder is copied to every device and sync'ing is automatic.

DropSync for Android (in conjunction with Dropbox) automatically copies modified files to and from an Android device, like Dropbox does for desktops and laptops. It can be set to activate only when wi-fi is available (to protect your 3G or 4G data plan), and only to work when the battery is above a selectable %age.

I think that DropSync will be most useful when flying w/o wi-fi and when traveling internationally.

boerne Aug 19, 2012 5:08 pm

Boxcryptor- it works on all platforms and OS to encrypt a dropbox folder. Seems easier than truecrypt.

pseudoswede Aug 23, 2012 8:51 am

My Dropbox also stopping syncing camera photos when in a wifi environment. Hmmmm...

Finally looks good on my Tab, even phone.

pseudoswede Sep 6, 2012 2:06 pm

Mrs. Swede likes to send me calendar entries from her Crackberry to my e-mail. After trying six apps to import .ics files, I finally found one that actually works well.

Invitation Processor Free.

I like it so much, I'll probably spend the dollar to buy the Pro version.

But before I do, anyone with any other recommendations? (Must be compatible with Ice Cream Sandwich.)

RepublicWireless - Unlimited Everything, $19/month + Tax, No Contract

Not an app, but an entire phone company: RepublicWireless.com

They sell Android phone which have been modified to automatically use wifi as much as possible and cellular signals as little as possible, for phone, text (some issues) and data. You pay for your phone ($249 now, I believe) upfront, then pay ~$22 / month with no contract, no early termination fee. You get unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, unlimited data.

When it's using the cellular network, the phone is on Sprint. So, it's not a GSM phone and has no SIM that can be swapped out. If you're international the cellular system won't work, but if you can grab a wi-fi signal you've got a working phone.

I've been a customer since ~December and have been pleased with the service and even more pleased with the price.

App to Utilize One Paid Wi-Fi Source for Several Wi-Fi Devices?

Is there an app that lets one wi-fi device serve as a hotspot for all your wi-fi devices?

Some hotels charge a substantial daily fee for wi-fi, and limit you to one device.

I would like to use an Android tablet to distribute that wi-fi signal to 2 or 3 other computing devices in the room.

If you want to use your Android cell phone on wifi internationally, just download GrooVeIP Lite. Its free and I used it in conjunction with the wifi at the Sheraton Buenos Aires last week on my Nexus and it was fine. The quality was excellent.

Your phone should have an option of "Tethering and portable hotspot" in the wireless settings. I have used it when connected to 3G but have never tried it on WiFi only.

Isn't that option only available on Android OS of Ice Cream Sandwich and above?

No, it's been available since at least FroYo. Some carriers disable it, though. You can always get an app to do it.

Android will not do WiFi to WiFi.

You need to get a mini router. There is another thread in this forum with all kinds of reviews.

depends on what you mean. I can transfer files over wifi from my original 7" galaxy tab and g nexus 7 over my home wifi, including my samsung skyrocket att and gnex on a cheap t mobile sim. And I don't consider myself an expert. But my son in law is.
