I'm becoming a big fan of the Amazon free app of the day
|
First impression: Amazon Free apps are mostly games

I have been registered for Amazon's Appstore for about a week or two now. Admittedly, only a small sample but I do not find Amazon's free app of the day to really be all that. I will continue to look and see what they have in case something interesting comes along.

Splashtop remote was a very good free app from Amazon
|
As was SwiftKey X

Note that this feature is only on the Android version of Goog Maps. They delay the newest features on iPhone by quite a while.

Am I overlooking a straightforward way to determine if the applications listed in the Android (or Amazon) Market are tablet rather than phone versions?
|
my favorite app has to be grooveip this app lets you make calls from wifi or 3g/4g off your google voice account using this when i recently visited the uk i was able to call home for free

I was amazed at the negativity from certain iPhone users when Instagram was released for Android.
To be honest, I think there are better apps in Android already, such as pixlr-o-matic, so I don't understand what all the fuzz is about. Instagram's photo enhancements are average at best. Must be a hipster thing |
I don't really get it either. If you want your photos to look like they're from the 70's, then you need to grow out your sideburns too. Otherwise, it just looks stupid(er).
|
now everyone thinks they are a photographer with instagram lol

My favorite is TimeClockConnect. Let's me keep track of billable time for clients in a way that has really improved my bottom line.

Two new (to me) apps that have made a big difference.
FoxFi - Turns your phone into a Wifi hotspot, without incurring the extra $20/month charge that Verizon wants for that service. No cable required, plus in theory multiple devices could connect, so this easily replaces PDAnet. Talkatone - The "holy grail" of smartphones is to find an app that allows you to easily make calls without impacting your regular plan minutes. Basically making calls using data, not minutes. For Android, there used to be a combination of Google Voice, pbxes.org, and CSIPsimple. It was hard to setup, hard to maintain, not completely reliable. Talkatone has simplified things dramatically. No need for a separate SIP app or pbx. Combine Talkatone with a Google Voice number, and you easily can make AND receive calls, and send AND receive text messages. Setup is simple, and it's very stable. |

+1 talkatone. free calling back to the US from Europe (on wifi)! you need armv7 or higher though, otherwise, need to install the side-loading version.

What does this mean? What is armv7? What is a "side-loading version?"
side-loading version is an apk that you can d/l to install on your phone b/c it is not available through android play store/market. |

My friend had issues getting it to work on his SGS1. Works well on an LG Optimus though. |
There's this application called "Trade Accounting" for Android, don't know whether it is available for iPhone or not. I heard its good for keeping accounts. Mostly aimed at making balance sheets and other statements, but it seems you can keep an austere watch on your expenses when you're abroad with this app. I always wanted such an app because I tend to overspend every time. For me searching for apps is the most boring thing. I just found it today and hope it comes handy during my travels.

Most of the free daily apps on Amazon are games, but today's is something useful - Photo Transfer App.

This morning, a + icon appeared in the notification bar. I had no idea what it was. It lead to a spam ad.
It turns out that some apps install AirPush, a push-notification mobile ad network, on the phone. The ads are dsiplayed through the notification bar. AirPush Detector is a very small program, around 300 kb, that quickly scanned the phone, identified and removed the app containing AirPush (AroundMe World in my case). |
I'm in love with the Kindle App.. Nothing like reading on my phone, anytime/anyplace!! I really got into this new medium of fiction called "Emotobooks" Absolutely Love It.. and the abstract art even looks wonderful on my phone

I take it that it does not require a rooted phone, right? Thanks |

FoxFi does not require rooting. During a 2-hour car trip I enabled FoxFi so my son could play his Nintendo 3DS against remote users. He said it worked flawlessly.

It does not require a root, but as stated, might not work on all phones. As for my Epic 4g, it's flawless. I really try to not abuse it and it's only for the times I really need a connection more secure than the open wifi I may be connected to.

Guilty Pleasure= Helidroid 3D
|
Only game that I've completed all levels, and no it's not Angry Birds, is "Where's my water"
I love that game Nova Launcher on the GNEX is pretty good |
Talkatone is brilliant! Thx
|
Another one I just used on a SA trip is Trip Journal. with GPS it marks the location you want, then adds photos geotagged, and notes. When done you can upload a variety of places like facebook but the one I liked best was exported to google earth.

Looking for a personal VPN app
Can anyone recommend a personal VPN app? I'd like one that automatically connects when I get online with my phone, if that feature exists. I have a Samsung phone if that makes any difference.
I have Witopia on my laptop but have to connect manually when I'm out of the office. |
I just got an Android (2.3) phone, my first after being on Windows Mobile for many years.
I'm wonding if anybody can recommend a "profile switcher" similar to what I had for my old phone. I want to be able to set different profiles which control all settings on the phone: turn different radios (phone, bluetooth, wifi) on/off, establish connections, change alerts (volume, repeats, vibration, etc). And to setup automatic switching based on time, wifi location, etc. I noticed quite a few on the android marketplace but I would love to get some recommendations. Thanks. |
