All of the retractable ones I've seen have looked the same, and they're crap.
Maybe something more like this?

http://www.amazon.com/Pacsafe-Luggag.../dp/B000MWSZNA (maybe get a better lock)
http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Tra.../dp/B003F7524O (not as big as the others, but may be perfect for what you need)

i have an old retractable kryptonite lock that i bring on my ski trips and serves double duties. this seems to be the newest version. imo a lot more convenient and cleaner than those fixed length cables.

I have a couple of these from Maxpedition, and while I would never use it for my bike, it's deterrent enough for skis or luggage.
