A few other threads also touch on the folders (and sleeve to a lesser extent). The sleeve is a tight fit in a lot of carry on bags FWIW.

Don't forget one of the benefits that cubes with plastic liners offer. If you are forced to check a bag and it's raining, the bag will get wet but the clothes will stay dry. This has happened three times to me.

It will also help protect against spills from within your bag. I packed in cubes for a flight to Europe with Mrs. DCATravel and she packed a bottle of Fabreeze. Needless to say the bottle broke and her clothes were fresh smelling but soaked. After $300 in cleaning, my wife now packs in cubes.

I'm a big proponent of the Eagle Creek products. On all trips I use their shirt cube, which I find keeps my shirts wrinkle-free and tidy, and I take a small zippered cube for smaller items like socks, underwear and belts and any accessories (gym watch, etc.). If it's a longer trip, I often take a third cube for other clothes like pants and shorts. The cubes do a great job of keeping things organized and fairly compressed and wrinkle-free.
