Nikon D100 Problems
Anyone know if the Nikon D100 has a history of problems?
Occasionally (most recently Wednesday night), I will be using my camera, press the shutter release and nothing will happen. This "intermittent failure" will go on for a few minutes and then everything is back to normal?
Any ideas on what's going on here?
I heard a nasty rumor that any repair of a D series camera at Nikon costs $500 and up.
If there is a website that might be better suited to this question, I would appreciate a referral.

IIRC my D100 would exhibit that behavior when either the light was too low for it too focus/meter or when the battery was almost depleted.
Over the two years I had it my D100 never gave me any problems nor do I remember any particular common problems.
As for repair costs, $500 sounds a bit high for an average type of repair. I would guess it closer to $250-300. You have to understand that in the digital age they really don't "fix" cameras the way they used to, now they just replace entire assemblies, boards, etc.
As for referrals, just send it to Nikon USA right there in Melville, NY. You will probably have it back in a week or less.

Perhaps poor light in auto exposure modes?
I believe the poster ANRKITEC hit the nail on the head. When I got my new D200 a few months ago it exhibited the very same behavior and I thought my camera was malfunctioning. When I pointed the camera elsewhere it worked. Then I realized that it was perventing me from taking photos when the light was not sufficient in some of the auto exposure modes.

I would still bet that there is an incompatibility/out-of-range issue WRT your settings and the scene conditions.
Next time it happens look to see if the camera throws you a code. It will be in the top LCD panel where the exposure counter usually is and will look something like [ r-11].
You can then look the code up in the manual to see what the problem is.

We used Nikon D100 for work for a couple years---until they pretty much did what you're describing and ultimately kicked the bucket. Not sure if it has anything to do with us wearing them out (I work as a high school sports photographer), or poor design, but we went through several. They were sent off for repairs. Not sure what the cost was, I didn't have to pay it. Now most of us are using Nikon D70s---with occassional problems, too.

As said above, if you are going to fix it, ship it off to Nikon service. They can be reached at the following link:

They'll allow you to approve the service charge online before commencing work. For reference replacing the front of the body, CF slot as well as a general CLA was ~$200 on a D70 earlier this year.
If I were you I'd just replace the D100. Upgrade to a D70s or D200 or even a D300.
