I would still bet that there is an incompatibility/out-of-range issue WRT your settings and the scene conditions.

Next time it happens look to see if the camera throws you a code. It will be in the top LCD panel where the exposure counter usually is and will look something like [ r-11].

You can then look the code up in the manual to see what the problem is.
