Agreed, when I went in June I found it pretty empty. It's also close enough to Durango that you can use it as a base of operations.

Yeah that's where we stayed, at the DoubleTree downtown on the river. As an added bonus, we got to watch the Durango & Silverton steam train depart. And of course the Million Dollar Highway needs no introduction, though it was closed for all but an hour each day for construction this year.

Here's an odd ball: Tule Springs Fossil Bed NM. It's about 30 minutes north of the Las Vegas Strip. Currently just a temporary trail out in the desert near some subdivisons:
