Getting ready to head to Kenya in a couple weeks for a safari - much of it will be on foot with traditional vehicle drives mixed in. Will be bringing my Sony DSLR and trying to decide between the Sony 70-400 or Sigma 50-500 as a rental lens for the trip. I know they are both heavy lenses to be carrying for 5ish hours a day but I suppose that is the price I will pay to get (hopefully) good photos. Any thoughts on either of these lenses - I'm guessing the Sigma might be a better choice since it covers all of the range of the Sony and then some, albeit in a larger package to lug around.
Oh, and if I can get photos half as good as the ones in this thread, I'll consider myself successful! Very nice work, everyone.

Check out the test reports on the Sigma and make sure it's sharp all the way out to 500. I used the Tamron 150-600 and, at 500, that thing is very, very sharp. At 600, not so much. I suspect a 400 (presumably on a 1.6 crop body?) isn't going to have the range you need. I couldn't have done my Kenya/Tanzania trip with just one lens; I used a 15-85 as well as the 150-600. Each got quite a bit of use; you'll have some amazing landscapes where wide is the only way to go. But you'll only get so close to Leopards etc and need all the reach you can get.
We will be bringing a couple other lenses but I expect the 70-400 will stay on the camera most of the time for me.
Will definitely post some pictures once we're back!
