The various rumor sites disappointed a lot of people by pushing a ~$1500 debut price for the D600.

+1

I was honestly expecting ~$1699-ish. Oh, and prices for perfectly fine, brand-new D700s are coming down. Don't believe the "$2699" that's still up on Nikon's website.

I've got a D700 and was considering the D800 until I sat down with the guys from our imaging department and their D800. They have already decided that they need to replace all of the glass they've been shooting with to use the full potential of that sensor. They have a much better budget than me.

So I opted for the D600 instead. So far, it's working pretty well. It is really running right up there with my D700 in IQ. Build quality isn't quite as inspiring but that's no knock on the D600, just that the D700 is that solid. It takes a little getting used to the new control layout but not bad...except for the lack of zoom to 100% with one button. Looking forward to taking this on my next trip and doing some travel shooting.

Biggest downside is that now I want to go back and reshoot everything I've ever shot before.

Digital Photography Review has published their review of the Nikon D600. They seem to like it a great deal.

Cheers,
T.

why would you want to own a d700 AND a D600? just curious.

I always like to make sure I have a second body for back-up. When I got my D700, the D300 became the back-up. Since the D300 is a DX body though, that meant I had to keep some lenses around for it that weren't necessary on FX. (Mainly on the wide end) To slim down my kit a bit, it made sense to pick up another FX body. As I stated, I was tempted by the D800 but I wouldn't have the budget for the glass to properly support it too. The D600 came along and I had glass that would work for it. The added resolution for larger prints and video mode to experiment with are very nice to have. (Sometimes, a subject is just better rendered in video than stills. So I figured I'd play around with that.)

Just a FYI, I think today and tomorrow the D600 with the 24-85 lens is on sale for $1699.. Adorama, B and H and Amazon are also throwing in a bunch of extras... It is almost impossible for me not to order it.... but I really can't justify it as an upgrade from teh D700

Close - it's $1996, not $1699. There is however another $300 mail-in rebate if you purchase an Epson 2880 printer - is that how you got to $1699?

Still, that's a crazy price - almost $700 off what the D600 and 24-85 are selling for individually; $2000 for the body, $600 for the lens, and $50 for the card.

Wonder which one wasn't selling - the body or the lens.

Almost worth it to buy the kit and part out the lens and other accessories on eBay. Should be able to get ~$500 for that stuff, end up with a D600 body for ~$1400.

I think Nikon is just playing games these days. It's like the massive price cuts they made to the V1 a couple of months ago.

Maybe all of the negative reports about problems with dust/lubricant on the sensor killed sales? All of the big and small online sites have various bundles for the just under $2K price point. Now that this box is open though I don't see how they can possibly go back to the old prices. The offers indicate these prices are good until 12/29 though

Pretty sure the V1 price cuts were made in order to clear out inventory for the new V2.
