After Tina Sims was diagnosed with breast cancer in December, she called United Airlines to cancel her January trip to New Zealand and to ask for a refund for her and her husband. Chemotherapy and radiation treatments would pre-empt any travel for at least eight months.

I'm one of the group that buys travel insurance... just in case. Mrs. AZ and I have had four "major" trips, and have bought travel insurance on all but one (it was all award travel.)
One week before our trip to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, Mrs. AZ broke her ankle. Had we not bought the insurance, we would have been out a few thousand (big bucks for us .) However, one call to the TA and we had our money fully refunded within a couple of weeks.
