"MAY punish"? What a joke...

I think each package owner should get 5 minutes with the baggage handlers in question!

There are now reportedly three suspensions!

--------

Three baggage handlers were suspended Wednesday by Northwest Airlines after they were shown on television treating holiday packages like basketballs.

``We were embarrassed and disturbed by their actions,'' said Northwest vice president Dirk McMahon.

Mail contracts are a very lucrative source of income for the airlines. It would be interesting to se what (if any) action is taken by the USPS. Baggage handlers seem immune to sanctions......witness the "secret tapes" of some of them a few years ago rummaging through the checked baggage suitcases and pocketing whatever they wanted.

It's unfortunate that packages are handled this way, and I hope the lack of judgment is punished. Nevertheless, judging from the condition of many packages that I have received here in Anchorage, less than proper care during package handling is hardly unusual.

"I am shocked, SHOCKED, to hear that gambling is going on here!"

"Your winnings, sir."

I saw the video of these events and have to admit that, although I was glad they weren't my bags, it was pretty funny stuff. Now I understand how some of those wacko baggage damages happen! To the gallows!

Anyone have a link to video footage of this?

Incidentally, the Newsday link is expired and the NYTimes link requires a password.

I went to the news station that reported the story here in Mpls, their site is http://www.kstp.com

I do have a direct link to the movie, here it is: http://www.kstp.com/News/mail1.mov It's a pretty incriminating clip, check it out...

Handlers Union Blames Northwest

The union representing three Northwest Airlines baggage handlers who were videotaped playfully tossing mail into a bin five days before Christmas blamed the incident on the airline's outdated equipment.

Hell, why not blame the packages themselves for inconveniently being there or all the post offices who thoughtlessly decided to ship them via Northwest?

Is it possible that the tossed bags were actually oversize cabin baggage that was gate-checked, and NW wanted to make a point about not abusing the carry-on restrictions?
