Actually I see a lot of Thai males with these jean contraptions (capri jorts?) that go to just below the knee.

Maybe handy for rice farming? And other wet work.

Not just seasonally cool, I think last night was the coldest night in about four years in Bangkok!

It’s nice being able to sleep with the window open instead of air conditioning, isn’t it?

I wouldn't know. I'm in hotel quarantine without openable windows at the moment

Meh. In a day or two you'll be overcome with dust and dirt from outside.

And, the air, notes of raw sewage and kerosene, strong, smokey finish...rating 1/10.

Yeah, those are both really big issues in Bangkok

Just wanted to point out, that while I am not opposed to people wearing clean, neat shorts and have never seen any locals sneer at anyone in shorts, and although personally I wear light long pants and loose fitting light long aleeve shirts when in Bangkok, please let me give this piece of crucial advice to any fellow Americans visiting Bangkok, or any Asian or European location, for the first time; Please, please, please, for your own benefit and the benefit of everyone else, never wear cargo shorts. Nothing screams ugly American more than wearing cargo shorts. Yes, they are convenient with all the pockets and the loose fit, but just say no. For your own sake, the sake of the reputation of your countrymen/women and for world peace overall.

And while I am at it, please do not wear flip-flops when walking through the city of Bangkok. I have seen the rats. They have no fear and will walk right up to you. Personally, I often wear steel-toed Timberland boots or shoes in Bangkok at night, but even if you do not want to go to that extreme, you probably do not want to be in flip-flops on the same sidewalks where locals and tourists eat chicken, duck or fish soup and spit out the bones on the sidewalk for the large rats to enjoy.

I think the length of the shorts is key. IMO they need to fall well below the knee and be of some decent quality to even approach acceptability. I have seen guys wearing gymnast type shorts on the streets of Bangkok and they looked totally out of place.

And as others have indicated: locale plays a big factor. When in doubt look around and see how others in the environment are dressed.

Just out for a quick jaunt: BTS, mall, bank, lunch, supermarket, motorbike taxi.

Maybe a third of the Thais observed wore shorts (men, women and children), more than that had flip-flops, or similar slide footwear.

Saw two people with cargo shorts, and, oh the horror, flip-flops. Looked fine to me, fashion police not seen attempting to arrest them, locals not breaking out the torches and pitchforks. Only issue with cargo shorts: that hammer-loop-door knob interaction.

Saw all these stores selling clothing, OMG, thye're selling shorts too.

People seen wearing steel-toed timberland boots: zero

People seen spitting bones: zero

Rats seen: zero.

No clue what "gymnastic-type shorts" are, but depending on the degree of difficulty I might award a "9.6"?

Yes, we get it. No speedos for those business meetings.

555 well said!

Pretty sure the person wearing steel-tipped boots would be the one to stand out and look silly rather than the people wearing flip-flops to go to the market.

As many incl. myself have said common sense applies to clothing decisions. Can’t believe this discussion is still rolling on

The taxi thread has, blessedly, faded a little.

Got to say I was a little surprised at the insecurity and dogma that's emerged in this "shorts" thread. I particularly enjoyed the idea of taking a recce to see what others are wearing before mustering the confidence to emerge in shorts-equipped splendour; though the riff about rats, chicken bones and steel-toed boots is a favourite.

Gymnastic shorts are likely linked to specialist areas, and bars, of the city.
