Better practice them next time, otherwise you are actually just not doing it right (if you dont realize it)
1. Check your reservation from time to time, at least once a week, to catch any changes/adjustments to the ticket. You would have noticed any equipment change and or seat reservation changes.
2. Send yourself a copy of the reservation and/or e-ticket after selecting seats/booking, so you have all information about your PNR/ticket number/booking classes/cabin/equipment/flight times/seat assignments/ticket rules. You would have noticed what seats you chose/hadn't chosen.
3. Do online check-in before even going to the airport. You eliminate any surprises at the airport that could be dealt with a day or two before.
4. If specific seats are A MUST for you, call the airline to confirm/reserve seats. Don't wait till check-in. Then, log into the airline website and send yourself a copy of the reservation and/or e-ticket after selecting seats, to keep as evidence of your phone call seat reservations.

I don't see that anyone has "attacked" you. Your second story about aircraft change is quite different to the original post where you didn't bother to reserve a seat then blamed TG.

Others have already spoken about this, but it's common practice to allow this for any number of reasons. Just because you haven't run into it, or don't need it, doesn't change the reality. Here's one of many reasons why someone may not want to select a seat: some carriers reserve certain seats for day-of-travel assignment only. If a passenger wants such a seat, they may be wise to not get any assigned seat, such that the other passengers will pick all of those that are available for assignment. This reduces the risk that the seat assignment opens up and the carrier assigns one of the other passengers with a seat assignment to the now-available seat. Plus, you eventually established that a) you did make a seat assignment at time of reservation, and b) your lack of seat assignment at check-in was due to an aircraft swap. Your proposed change would not have addressed that situation.

Sure but that's simply your opinion. I've experienced multiple occasions with multiple airlines when there's been an equipment change and I don't recall ever getting an email from the airline. Changes to schedules, even 5 minute changes, yes, but equipment changes no
