Open jaw within same zone is allowed AFAIK. I asked specifically about AKL-BKK-ZRH//FRA-BKK-AKL and this was OK. Including stopovers in BKK both ways.
In the end a simple AKL-BKK-ZRH return was achieved for Mrs TK for 50% award, so my GUP1 was likewise a simple return.
You may care to confirm directly with THAI ROP office.

Didn’t know it could be used by a ROP Plat member in this way, but I’m not Plat,

I have not checked current conditions, but I do know that previously I have used some form of award - PUP, GUP or birthday award for a nominee and more than once. Following is what it states about 2017 birthday gift:

Gold upgrade of a paid ticket cannot be used by award nominee if a Gold member, but can be used by a Platinum member.
