Award ticket question

I want to book two award Tickets to Bangkok. Right now I can get two first-class tickets through London on Thai's A340. However, if I do a search for one award ticket I can get a first class suite on the A380. My question is if I book one now, will I be able to book another one on a separate PNR. I Would rather fly on the A380 if possible but want to make sure that I can get two tickets

I would grab it now and wait for another to open up... It would be a separate award tix with a different PNR.

But, you could request seating together, no probs...

You may want to also consider grabbing the A346 seats (if you have enough points) and then check with your FFP what penalties would apply if you nabbed another F seat on the A380 and had to canx the A346?

Cheers,

A380??

I am looking to go up BKK LHR BKK in July but when I do dummy bookings there is only the A340-600 option. Am I missing something as this thread is discussing the A380 as an option? I have done first in the A340, pretty nice but is the A380 much better?

FRA

That is what I thought. Do you think the A380 is worth the hassle of going through FRA? I could easily take this routing as I have friends there but how flash is the 380?

Check also the possible tax difference, UK APD is a pain, especially for long-haul F. If available, i woul try the A380...

The tax on an award ticket LHR-BKK-HKT return is £439.49 is made up of the following:

£162.00 UK business class departure tax
£34.49 Heathrow security tax
£14.40 Thailand departure tax
£4.20 Phuket departure tax
£217.40 fuel surcharge tax

The last item mystifies me if anyone can explain.

Compare £4.20 and £14.40 to £162. "The UK is open for business." Haha.

Fuel Surcharge, sometimes called YQ is not really a tax at all, but a charge levied by the airline that is meant to protect them from fuel price fluctuations.

Most airlines are quick to increase it as fuel costs rise, but very slow to reduce it.

It's also charged on most award tickets (including all THAI).

BTW the £162 increases to £166 in April 2013

I was unaware of this increase. Highway robbery. So if the OP routed thru FRA, he would have the satisfaction of avoiding most of this tax.

Since I note the OP lives in the USA, I will add that £188 = $301.

Sorry to scare you, got previous figures mixed up.

From April 2013 Band C (4001-6000) miles increases from £162 to £166
Band D (Over 6000) increases from £184 to £188.

Still highway (or airway) robbery IMHO !

are you using United Mileage Plus Miles? If so and you are 1K, and have enough miles for this....book everything -- two awards together on non-380 + one on the 380. Then there are no fees as a 1K and you can redeposit the awards that you don't use.

Following up. Yes, I used UAMP miles. I set an award search alert on ExpertFlyer and last Thursday woke up to one of those wonderful notifications that 2 F saver awards were available on the A380 flight from FRA-BKK. Called UA and they made the changer for no fee. Actually I was refunded $27! Looking forward to TG in F!
