BBQ near IAH

I've got approx a 3hr 45min layover at IAH (and have TSA-pre).

I'm craving some good texas brisket. I'd appreciate any recommendations near IAH.

As surprising as it sounds The Real Food Co. near C34 has really, really good BBQ!

I've been to Houston a few times and don't think you'll find better BBQ close enough to the airport with under four hours to spare.

That is actually my goto place when I eat at IAH. But it is far from good BBQ. I once asked for MOIST brisket and the guy said "ooh it's very moist". I wanted some real BBQ this time

I ended up going to corkscrew BBQ. I rented a car as it would be half the cost of an Uber. Total was $26 plus gas.

For others that want to try this I'll give my timing.

1045: arrive at gate
1047: off plane
1115: arrive at rental car center and pickup car
1125: exit rental car center
1145: arrive at corkscrew BBQ, get in line
1220: receive food
1230: head back to airport and get gas
1300: return car
1310: on bus back to airpor
1325: drop at airport
1340: arrive at gate
1430: flight departure time

From reading reviews, corkscrew is usually very busy on Saturday an hour wait but I lucked out since it was raining.

It's also a little longer returning on the rental bus going to c since it has to stop at d first with all those intl pax with lots of bags

So what did you think of the food?

where?

Real food is "ok" relative to other choices (ie. fast food). But the BBQ doesn't really have any smokiness. It just tastes like they made it in an oven vs a smoker. More like bbq "flavored" food (ie any food with bbq sauce on top. It's still my #1 choice in IAH.

Corkscrew BBQ was excellent. One of the best I've had in a really long time. I don't get much good bbq where I live.

There is a Rudy's in Spring off of 45 that should be decent as well (only been to the ones in Austin and on 290 in Houston). About 20-25 minute drive from IAH, looks like Corkscrew is also nearby.

Texas Monthly chimes in about the surprising smoked-in-airport BBQ.

A fire is burning in the middle of George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. It never goes out and cannot be left unattended. Thousands of passengers walk past it every day. An elaborate, eye-catching system of copper-clad tubing carries the smoke outside, where it exhausts above the airplanes sitting at their gates. Ramp workers often complain about the smell, but only because it makes them hungry.

That fire is coming from the smokers at Q, the new barbecue joint inside Terminal E. Airport barbecue vendors are nothing new, but they typically smoke the meat off-site, truck it in, and serve it, reheated, to customers who don’t expect much else. Bush is the only place I know of where raw briskets are cooked with burning hardwood.

United Airlines, the largest tenant at Bush, controls development in its terminals. To help run its food and retail concepts, the airline turned to New York–based OTG Management, which designs, builds, and oversees restaurants and stores at airports across the country, with an emphasis on local.

A barbecue joint where the meat is cooked on-site was OTG’s idea. (I should point out that Q isn’t the only Bush vendor smoking barbecue on the premises. Ray’s BBQ Shack, which opened in 2016 in Terminal B, uses a smoker tucked in the back that exhausts straight up through the roof. Sometimes the “only in Texas” clich is wholly appropriate.)
Read on to see what he thought of the meat.

Think Corkscrew BBQ would still be possible on a Friday night connecting from an international flight with 4 hours available? I have Global Entry, for what it's worth, though I'm not sure yet if I'll need to check bags.

EDIT: never mind, they seem to sell out pretty quickly every day per their website.
