Uber and Lyft shutdown in Austin (updated: they're back)
Today voters in Austin, TX went to the polls to weigh in on Proposition 1, an attempt to overturn a bill requiring mandatory fingerprint-based criminal background checks for new Uber and Lyft drivers in the city.
The results are in, and with 56 percent of total voters voting against Prop 1, the proposition failed to pass. This means that the bill requiring fingerprint-based background checks will proceed, with new drivers needing to pass the check before being able to drive.
In response to the news, Uber and Lyft have announced that they will be shutting down operations in the city, at least temporally.

According to what I heard on KUT this morning (which was probably just them reading from another news source), Uber and Lyft won't do pickups within the city of Austin. But they will still pick up in Pflugerville, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, and the remainder of metro Austin...just not within the city of Austin.
Lyft has updated the coverage map, you can see it toward the bottom of the page here:

Prior to this, both Uber and Lyft had reduced coverage to both the north and south; now at least Lyft looks to go way above Georgetown (neither would pick up there before).

...a few minutes after 10 a.m., Gov. Greg Abbott used four pens to affix his signature to House Bill 100, taking ride-hailing regulation statewide in Texas and rendering moot the Austin ordinance that Lyft and its chief competitor, Uber, disliked so much they shut down operations in Austin a little more than a year ago.
