Orangewood Suites - Austin
Has anyone stayed at this hotel and can provide detail on the surrounding area? It is close to Highland Mall but am not sure if the area is 'iffy'. It was at one time a Hawthorne Suites but has recently been completely remodeled.
Any info on this property would really be helpful. Thanks

The area around Hwy 290 and I35 in my opinion is the definition of Iffy places to stay in Austin.
Can't speak for the orangewood except that its at the corner of Hwy 290 and I35....

I'd be less concerned. It's the Northeast corner which seems a bit more "optimal", but the properties are downscale from those on the NE corner of 183 & IH35, the next exit. There used to be (and may still be) a number of restaurants across IH35 in a complex along the frontage road. On the other hand, Highland Mall sort of defines "downhill".

UPDATE
Thanks BradJ and TMOliver - That is kind of what I thought. I have this booked for February but will check it out on our October trip. We always stay at the NW Staybridge Suites which we really like but it was hard to pass up the price of Orangewood if the place is better than expected. I can always cancel and then book with Staybridge.
On our most current trip to Austin, we went over to Orangewood and asked to see a room - NOT ANY PLACE WE EVER WANT TO STAY! The room was very tired looking and the concrete steps leading to the unit were extremely decayed. The DoubleTree next door looked quite nice, but the area was not as nice as staying in the Research Blvd. area. Hyatt Place and Staybridge will remain our goto places.

I really enjoyed this hotel. There are not many places around who offer free hot breakfast and dinner. My room had a working fireplace, balcony and the kitchen has full size appliances and a dishwasher. The hotel even provided dishes, pots and pans for us to use in the room. There is a swimming pool and laundry on the premises. I understand some people want bright & sparkly bling bling & an overpriced hotel experience but not me. This place was perfect we had ball on a budget. This my new Home away from Home in Austin, Texas.
