Countries visited, miles flown means something to me as a frequent FLYER.

I'm at a loss to understand how you inferred from what I wrote that post counts don't matter as I never said that given post counts and FT titles such as mine were completely unaffected by this update. Members cannot opt to enable or disable their post count.

I'll say it again, I chose to disable all the badges as the 20-year badge is the only one that means anything to me. That's merely MHO and YMMV, meaning your opinion may vary and you're entitle to it as I am mine.

Apparently I need to post to activate…

GrayAnderson Oct 15, 2024 12:45 pm

How does the badge for number of countries work?

I'm curious as to where this came from - I don't think I've been to anywhere near that many countries (I just did a mental tally and I think my lifetime total is closer to 20, and that's including "my train went through Monaco in the middle of the night").

rbbjhb Oct 15, 2024 1:36 pm

Ditto.

samplat Oct 15, 2024 2:23 pm

Presumably via your profile settings but sounds like you didn’t change your settings?

I didn’t have any badges previously and went into profile settings to select the one that made sense for me.

ChubbyPanda123 Oct 15, 2024 3:17 pm

Badges were just released this month, I just noticed them today... I have just gone to my 30th country in September... I have not assigned myself any badges, in fact, I haven't logged on for a few months, yet the 30 countries badges is on my profile... How did FlyerTalk know???

Very spooky! Just in time for halloween lol!

SkiAdcock Oct 15, 2024 3:57 pm

What's with the random now you see it, now you don't "Original Poster" label. When this badge stuff first started I had OP (I'm not; I joined in 2002), then it disappeared. I've seen others have it under their handles but they're not OP's either. Ironically, one who I know IS a OP doesn't have it under his handle. Just noticed someone who joined in 2015 has OP under his handle.

Cheers.

"Original Poster" refers to the first or original poster in the thread, Sharon. :D :D :D

Inside this thread, you'll see IBJoel noted as the original poster.

dhuey Oct 15, 2024 5:04 pm

I could not find a badge for how I'm richer, more worldly, and more attractive than all other FlyerTalkers. Did I miss it?

Right. I am sitting on at least 90 countries.

Since Joel mentioned time on board, I assumed it was referring to Original Member (of which there seems to be no designation). Perhaps it's just me, but think it's a bit silly to have an Original Poster badge. One can see who the OP was be reading the first post in the thread ;). I get the years, countries, miles thing, but don't see any value to having original poster listed.

Cheers.

When message threads get to be more than a few posts I find value in seeing who started the discussion. It's n:eek:t always relevant, but it is quite often.

Mine were activated when I liked a post.

Edit: Reading through this thread I'm thinking we need one more set of badges, number of most random and pathetic things complained about (Hall of Rants et al.) :D

BTW, I like the badges, nice job!

IBJoel Oct 16, 2024 10:22 am

Auto-filling the badges with countries is a bug we're looking into

DenverBrian Oct 16, 2024 10:55 am

Look at the bright side: None of the badges say "ARG: 4 UNDEFINED" :D :D :D

cruser1 Oct 16, 2024 10:59 am

Since the launch of this badge feature, about half the time when I try to create a new thread the thread gets created, but I'm not redirected to the new thread. I get an HTTP 500 error instead. This happens in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox on Windows and ChromeOS.

Just got one a few minutes ago when I created this thread - https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/prem...st-240-tp.html

For what it's worth, the Original Poster indicator isn't new, but it does seem to have been re-styled at the same time badges were rolled out.

No, no 'Original Member' badge but that's because this is an FT title that appears under the member's username like the titles under yours & mine so this also was unaffected by the badge introduction. Original Members are still recognized as such.

I’m guessing I’m not the only FTer who’s visited way more than 50 countries!

sophiesophie Oct 21, 2024 6:40 am

I want to know, too!

I just noticed these badges today (just got back from vacation.) I have 30 countries - I'm not certain it is correct. I think 30 is too high.

Where do you assign the countries in your profile? I looked at mine and don't see anywhere that I would specify where I've been?

They reported that some country badges were auto-assigned by a bug.
https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/36601347-post214.html

You can change it on your badges page

Just some words of encouragement - really awesome feature! Most of the feedback seems in relation to designing this feature so everyone has a common understanding of what the badges mean. You'll get there, love this forum. Cheers.

dhuey Oct 23, 2024 3:15 pm

I'd like to see badges for how often a FlyerTalker gives travel-related advice to another FlyerTalker with nothing other than a helpful spirit in mind.

well for you that would be your post count :-)

IBJoel Oct 29, 2024 2:40 pm

25 years on the site and 100, 150, and 200 countries badges have been added

I just noticed that my “tenure” badge automagically changed from 10 years to 15 years this morning

Something must have spooked you to consider signing up at Halloween 🎃 in 2009 then.

ranles Nov 3, 2024 11:41 am

A lot of the countries we have visited have been from a ship. No airport. Do these count?

Entirely up to you. If you want them to count, count them. I am sure people end up visiting countries without flying in/out whether it's by land, sea or air, and they count that as a country they have visited. For example I have included Macau in my total which was a ferry trip from Hong Kong, and Brunei which was a land border crossing from Sarawak, Malaysia.

I count them in mine

SPN Lifer Nov 4, 2024 8:44 pm

:tu: E.g. Diego Garcia in the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), or Port Louis, Mauritius, both highlights of my 1981 travel. 🌴 ⚓

There's a 72-post (as of when this is posted) thread on how to count countries in TravelBuzz here:

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trav...s-visited.html

Bottom line is that there's a lot of room for personal choice, both in terms of what counts as a country and what counts as a visit. Personally, I'd count cruise ship stops where I went ashore, though I haven't had any in countries where I didn't also stay on land overnight at some point.

Can we have badges for number of likes and quotes?

Possibly/probably for the former (it will require switching to a new likes system) and I'm not certain for the latter. I will definitely bring it up to see the feasibility

Huh? What is the point of that? I get # of countries, etc but that sounds like it will just add to the clutter.
