Oooh what does mine say. How does it know the countries?

You could put the ultimate one for countries visited as "All"... :D

How does one deselect displaying number of years on FlyerTalk? I don't see that at the Badges page.

It would probably be beneficial to put an explainer on the badge page about this. At first glance I was under the impression it was counting the number of nights in hotel beds per year.

How does Flyer talk know the number of countries visited????

And where did those badges appear from? How does Flyer talk know the number of countries visited????

That’s actually what I used initially to select my badge since “free” nights made no sense to me as a metric. After the discussion here I opted to remove that particular badge entirely because it’s confusing and useless (IMHO).

As for explainer, a badge that needs an explained isn’t terribly helpful. How are newbies (the target audience for seeing the badges) going to know what they mean?

rajuabju Oct 5, 2024 8:41 am

This is cool, but would be nice if the text for everything was a bit more clear / easier to read. Esp. in dark mode, reading "countries" "nights" "airline miles" is just about impossible.

davistev Oct 5, 2024 8:59 am

I just want to see what my badges look like - hehehe!

Got it. Scroll to the bottom; the X at the top does not do anything.

T8191 Oct 5, 2024 10:46 am

I am unmoved one way or another. The discussions and information are what keep me here daily.

I would just like my 0.5m airline miles to register! :)

Once the 100 countries badge is available, perhaps that series of badges should be reprogrammed so that only the highest selected is displayed?

Perhaps this was intentionally done as a workaround to the lack of badges for more nights; e.g. a person selects 40 and 30 and 10 as a way to denote 80.

I agree. I'm still trying hard to think of a hotel statistic that would be as meaningful to me as the listing of hotel programs that some of us include in our bios. On a side note, I tried to look up something in the glossary and got a 404 error. A member has posted about it here. Is that a glitch or a change?

squeakr Oct 5, 2024 3:26 pm

Agreed!

It doesn't. I suggest you have a look at this thread:

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/tech...es-launch.html

zebranz Oct 5, 2024 5:00 pm

Its how many countries in the last year?
Reward nights per year- keeping track of me using my points? I do not even show my hotel programs. Hmmm
Is there a reason for these things? Some intern having fun?

moondog Oct 5, 2024 5:31 pm

Today I noticed that a "10 countries" badge had been attached to my profile (I think I was able to remove it). I have never bothered to count countries, so I don't know if I deserve that badge, but I'm a little curious about how FT knows.

gaobest Oct 5, 2024 7:35 pm

Honor system. Why would we need to lie to others in FlyerTalk?

They appear to unlock once you make a post. I experienced the same thing and they allowed editing as soon as I posted here saying I couldn’t change anything.

Lets try this !

Small update to the Tampermonkey script. The infinite scroll loads the images with a relative URL (whereas the original page load is with an absolute URL).

Code:

// ==UserScript==
// @name Hide Badge
// @version 1
// @description Hide Badges on FlyerTalk
// @match https://*.flyertalk.com/*
// @grant GM_addStyle
// @run-at document-start
// ==/UserScript==

GM_addStyle ( `
.badge-fill {
display: none;
}
img[src^="https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/images/badges/"] {
display: none;
}
img[src^="images/badges/"] {
display: none;
}
` );

FlyingUnderTheRadar Oct 6, 2024 9:59 am

Nice monkey script :-). I really do not care about badges, I am here for the content (in cases the lack thereof). But I added some just to fill in the dead-space. My suggestion (and was already suggested) for the badge hiding is to make the fill color the same as the background color.

As for the country badge, I also agree with others that additional limits would be nice. Of course the ultimate badge would be letting users create their own (kinda adding a profile picture).

Hi everyone!

We're very happy to launch our latest feature: Badges.

These are viewable in both desktop and mobile skin and signify your personal accomplishments in the world of travel. While some, like your time on FlyerTalk, are automatically assigned, others are on the "honor system" and you may assign the travel badge that best corresponds to your milestones at your leisure.

We have more in the works!

I have a serious request: joke badges. A few of us here like to poke fun at the elite status section below our usernames. I've gone with "Piggly Wiggly 'Shop the Pig!' Preferred Shopper". I do the same thing with my LinkedIn profile. https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrew-dhuey-3b37a122/

I'd love it if we could design and upload our own custom badges. Would be more interesting than seeing how many countries someone's visited. Of course all the normal TOS would apply.

Thanks for considering.

Add me to the camp of ”contribution badges” instead of ”bragging badges”

SS255 Oct 6, 2024 4:38 pm

I’ve been to over 50 countries, and my badge only has 10 countries. And, my profile indicates UA 1MM, yet I don’t have a MM badge How does the Flyertalk bot come up with the data for the badges? I couldn’t figure out how to fix this.

Likewise I'm at 134 Countries and would love to have 125+ at least.

Bragging Rights? Though I'd like to see a 100,125, & 150+ Country Badge since I'm at 134.

dhuey Oct 6, 2024 9:16 pm

Not to brag, but I've visited 867 countries. How do I load up the badge for that?

I find it funny that people would display ALL the 10 - 20 - 30 - 40 - 50 countries badges concurrently, which is quite senseless. Can these be made exclusive, as in, you can only select and display ONE of them at any one time?

Upthread it was mentioned they're summing them so someone who has visited 150 countries shows all the badges.

global happy traveller Oct 7, 2024 4:51 am

Interesting concept, but all my badges are "locked". I was hoping to get at least a 5 or 10 year of contributions lol.

I don't think it is just people choosing to display all the badges, I think flyertalk seems to be putting them there automatically for some reason. I'm not sure what logic is being used to determine the number of countries visited. I haven't selected any badges at all, nor do I wish to, yet it is displaying 10, 20 and 30 countries for me. I certainly haven't been to 30 countries and I doubt I have been to 20.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...4f8ae3f366.gif

I know there are mixed views on the badges, but I personally think they are very large and obtrusive particularly on mobile view,. I hope in future they introduce an option to switch them off completely so that those that don't want to see any of these badges don't have to, and those that like them can.

IBJoel Oct 7, 2024 10:06 am

My intention was this:
How many miles did you earn and
How many reward (free) nights did you earn

Both were meant through all means, so if you have a credit card that helps you earn miles or nights, those can be included.

I agree with the blank spaces being unsightly and we really tried to make them disappear. We hope to do that for a future release. I'll even ask for the ability to hide badges to be developed.

Boraxo Oct 7, 2024 3:42 pm

I love this idea. I would add lifetime status badges as well which are normally tracked in a thread in the relevant forums.

FYI the country count badge is way off. Maybe someone can figure out a way to use this thread to update:

In what way do you mean "off"? I understand many FlyerTalkers have been to more than 50 countries. That's already been addressed in this thread and there will be upcoming badges. Although if we're on the topic of my intent, I would say you have not been to a country if you haven't experienced the culture and people. Having a layover in an airport or staying in your hotel and ordering room service the whole time doesn't count.

ETA: Even with my intent, how you ultimate decide to calculate and display your badges is up to you

What's the logic that FT uses to "sum up" the countries? Must a member indicate that in their profile, if so where?

Interesting. Mine was blank other than "15 years as member". I then manually chose "40 countries" as my personal count and added the badge. Didn't know some had these badges added as default.

I’m not a software guy, but I gotta think a pretty simple fix would be to tweak the source code for the placeholder images:
  • line color = white*
  • fill color = white*

(* - or whatever would be needed to match a dark background)
