I’ve tried the link from here and from my flyer talk. All my badges are locked. How do I unlock them?

What's the logic that FT uses to "sum up" the countries? Must a member indicate that in their profile, if so where?

I think it was just an individual's idea of how best to use the ones available. It appears from IBJoel that more badges may be forthcoming so may solve the issue.

same for me it says I’ve been to 40? I’ve no idea if that’s right but I would guess the true number is closer to 20 maybe? Had no idea people really counted this sort of stuff and find the whole thing a little odd… but yeah curious what made it think I’ve been to 40 countries?

Both were meant through all means, so if you have a credit card that helps you earn miles or nights, those can be included.

I agree with the blank spaces being unsightly and we really tried to make them disappear. We hope to do that for a future release. I'll even ask for the ability to hide badges to be developed.

Thank you.

That's all that was asked from day one.

There was no need to be rude to the more seasoned posters in search of new.

Having a layover in an airport or staying in your hotel and ordering room service the whole time doesn't count.

ETA: Even with my intent, how you ultimate decide to calculate and display your badges is up to you

Another related question -- what c:confused:unts as a country?

Never mind I found the directions upthread to fix the badges. My only further suggestion would be to add more categories as hotel nights is a little off (lifetime makes more sense than annual)

Thanks for setting this up.

IBJoel - Many folks, myself included, have been asking how the number of countries visited were first assigned by default. What crawlers were used and based on what data? Or was it just randomly assigned in the hope that the member would discover it's incorrect and go change it?

I recently came in second in the United States Handball Association Nationals. So, I think a generic First Loser badge and we’d both be covered.

Why not just leave them where they are but make them white instead of gray?

Because in Dark Mode they ARE essentially white.

I love this badges change. It’s fun. I also spent 5 minutes typing the countries I’ve visited and had previously forgotten Taiwan. Too funny as I’ve been there 2 separate times. I enjoy having been to 20 countries as opposed to 19 :-)

exactly - we can do all our desired customizing in our MyFlyertalk sections. We can also ignore the badges if they bother us. I enjoy seeing what people choose to share.

I want to bigly congratulate you for this. Thankfully we also can include this with our info in that MyFlyertalk section. It’s fabulous.

Why n:confused:t use a .gif/.png with "transparent" as the color? Most browsers support that.

I'm really not certain. The cron runs 1,000 users at a time, I think, so it may have just been a lot for the system to handle at once and there were some errors

True, but white would at least solve the problem for a non-trivial portion of users.

You can remove the badges by adding

||flyertalk.com/forum/images/badges/*

to the image filter of your choice.

Given all the discussion in this thread, I have a question: does FT have a beta program where select users try out upcoming changes and provide feedback? If so, was feedback provided for this feature?

Yes and yes.

One of the reasons I dislike these badges is that there is now so much clutter in the left-hand sidebar that even a one-line comment takes up a lot of screen space.

I do agree on this point. I thought this was the reason that signature length was limited

No shade to our anonymous research group, but I would have liked more input on this category specifically. I saw a record of 200 nights earned in a year, which I found pretty insane, so I halved it.

See above for comments for countries and FT profile age but, essentially, while I recognize there are 200 countries (give or take), visiting even 10 is an extremely privileged position to be in. Less than 5% of the developed world has travelled to more than 30 countries. BUT a 100 countries badge will be coming.

The FT population is not representative of the developed world. It would be interesting to see the stats on countries visited in the FT population, I would think it is much higher than average considering it's an air travel forum.

Exactly! Wouldn't one expect given the long association between IB & FT that they would've recognized & appreciated that fact in preparing this feature? That it isn't clearly seen & understood is frankly disappointing.

FWIW I'm far from the most well traveled amongst us yet if I had to could probably list 50-countries I've visited so 100 countries badge should've been foreseen.

I ended up however disabling all badges save for my 20-year badge as it's the only one that means something to me. As the FT saying goes YMMV.

I would think post count would matter alot more than years since signing up. I'm sure there are lots of forums out there where I've had accounts even long but now no longer visit.
Countries visited, miles flown means something to me as a frequent FLYER.

TalkingPoint Oct 14, 2024 7:42 pm

On the badges page the third row is titled "Yearly Hotel Reward Nights". However, when you click the (i) icon on any of the options, it says "This badge denotes your lifetime hotel reward nights."
