I can sort of hypothesize why trending and/or new posts pages aren't appealing from IB's perspective; their SEO value is probably close to zero. The pages that attract views from the internet at large and can be marketed to them are presumably popular airline forums like BA (we've been told of its greatness many times) and travel hack type content (e.g. mileage run deals) that competes with blog sites.

The thing is, a lot of the people speaking up in this thread are the among the much smaller group of content creators who happen to enjoy trending threads.

Stripping away that functionality might seemingly be a smart use of IB's resources in the short term, but if the content creators drift away out of boredom, then the quality of the remaining content will diminish.

I googled “best seat on United 777” on my work computer- which I never log into Flyertalk with, and never use for personal browsing.

The first link related to Flyertalk is the 21st result and links to a blog post from Jan 9, 2020, not the forums.

the 28th result is the UA thread “Everything You Want to know about where to sit on a 77-200 Polaris…”

The SEO for the forums is…dismal, at best.

It looks like there are a large number of longtime members who post rarely (myself included) mourning the loss of the trending list.
I don't expect it would take much to convince those members to drift away, perhaps they are not important in the greater scheme of things?

While I am not a long time member, I am now finding this too much work... I guess I will have to see if I am one of those who drifts away...

You guys know how reddit has basically engulfed the traditional forum structure?

there's a phenomenon where google search is so garbage nowdays where you'd google a question and append "xyz reddit" at the end so you can get more candid and succinct answers from what seemingly are real people

i do that with flyertalk!

"sheraton eau claires calgary flyertalk"
"air canada vdb compensation flyertalk"

and what happens when i get my own question answered? I click on the trending page to see what's new and notable on the board

at least that's what i used to do.

i was among the perfect organic traffic customers, i think

As I result of the FOMO from the loss of the trending tab, I looked for alternatives and see there are RSS-era see-everything "New Posts" and "Posts from Last day"
https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/sear...1785139&query=
https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/sear...1785134&query=
What's the difference?

neither of those links is working for me, but the problem with “new posts” etc is that you don’t get any kind of sorting other than based on time of posting, so a lot of brand new and not very interesting threads to wade through and an occasional thread of interest

Interesting, seems like those search strings are user specific, won't load if not signed in. New Posts link is in the main forum menu (web view) and Today's Post is under Quick links.
But yes, please bring back a trending page, ads injected and option to filter out BA :)

This does not work for me

This smells like all the FF program changes :

We have listened to our customers and so we have enhanced away the things they like, but dont worry we will keep telling them its better.

How does this downgrade make the site "competitive " ? If you dont want to use this function you dont have to. Does its cost a lot to leave things as any people were happy with ?
Did thousands complain about its existence ?

I just wish mobile at least had "new posts". With trending gone, mobile is left with nothing.

travellingmip Mar 8, 2024 6:08 pm

Sadly it has been deactivated. I quite liked the trending page because I would see posts that might interest me in forums I wouldn't usually frequent.

Agreed. If maintaining the "trending" algorithm is a significant cost item (though, is it?), new posts might be an okay compromise (at least IMO because I don't mind scrolling through a few pages on the desktop site).

Eujeanie Mar 8, 2024 6:48 pm

I agree, I really miss it and hope they reinstate it. How was it harming anyone? If you wanted to click on posts of interest you did, if you didn't, you didn't.

travellingmip Mar 8, 2024 7:09 pm

I knew about the deactivation. Not about this thread. Sadly I don't ever remember seeing a thread opposing the deactivation of the trending page on the trending page itself.
