Bug or feature? Clicking on link to mod-moved thread doesn't redirect to new location

I THINK this is new-ish (within past 90 days??) behavior:
I subscribe to a couple of forums/fora, with daily emails listing new and updated threads. I believe that it used to be the case that when a moderator moved a thread that had already been listed in the daily email, my clicking on the link to the original location in the email would redirect to the new location, and I'd be all set.

Several weeks ago, at least, I noticed that when I click on a moved thread, I now get the message that the thread doesn't exist and contact the administrator, with no indication of where the errant thread has gone.

Was there a change? Does anyone care? I liked the old behavior, myself.

Are you certain you are clicking through to threads that were moved to another public location, and not threads that were deleted or moved to a private forum?

The thread redirection is not permanent and may be set by the moderator that moved the thread originally to expire in X number of days. Meaning that the behavior you're describing will occur when that redirect expires.

Wait, so setting a redirect to expire doesn't actually remove the redirect from the forum view but simply makes the link cease working?

In that case, I can't possibly see the utility of the "expire" option and probably won't ever use it again, since the only reason I ever used it was to make it so the redirect didn't clutter up the forum after it ceased to be useful.

Don't think these were deleted or privatized - from the thread titles, they seem innocuous.

I suspected that there was a setting that someone - administrator, moderator - could set...this is most likely the case, particularly in view of the comment below.

If you are going to use "expire" I vote for a 48-hour timeframe - that should be enough for most of us to catch up on our subscription emails.
(I appreciate mods' diligence in keeping the forest of threads pretty organized, which seems to have increased in the past year or so - just want to be able to follow something that has been moved!)

Automatic e-mail notification - odd frequency

I have subscribed to many threads/forums which are of interest to me, but I have found an odd behaviour about the notification frequency of automatic e-mails I get in my mailbox.

When I am very active on FT, I start to get a flood of auto-notifications by email.
When I am absent from FT for multiple days, those auto-notifications dry up and I get nothing.

The thing is, that when I am active, I am well on page about discussions and do not actually need those auto-notifications. Sometimes they are even replies that I have already read on FT before they post to my mailbox.

In contrast, when I am away for days for whatever reasons, I would like to get those notifications to stay tuned about interesting discussions.

I don't know if other people feel it the same way, but for me the auto-notification system works against my wish. Don't know if I can do something about that...

IBobi Jan 9, 2015 3:17 pm

You get one notification on a thread until you check that thread again, no matter how many new posts have been made there.

I am not sure if it is intended as you describe but I have been eyeing recent days the notification behaviour and it is not definitely like that.

What is certain is that the only threads I get a daily notif irrespective of what I do are:
Hotel deals, MR deals and Premium fare deals. Actually I should be happy, those are the only threads I want to have eye on, the rest I shall just unsubscribe now :D

Something is broken with notifications. I am not receiving notifications for threads I follow, nor for private messages that I receive.

Is this a known problem? Is there a way to fix it? I have tried unsubscribing and resubscribing to a forum with no success.

Thanks
DAK

Actually, you get one notification about activity in a given thread until you log into FT (or access the FT site while logged in). After you log in, notifications are re-set and you will receive another email notification about the next update to a given thread, even if you did not actually view that thread.

Forum notifications are different than thread notifications. Thread notifications work as I described above. Forum notifications are sent to you on the schedule you choose (daily, weekly, etc.) regardless of your activity on the forum.

I am not receiving thread subscriptions.
Nothing in Spam.

I am going to try adding the subscriptions e-mail address to my safe senders list.

What is it?

New to FT -- coming to you from DDF :) [subscribing to threads]

Hi FT,

I'm new here. I am active on the forums on DDF - but there I am able to subscribe to threads with Tapatalk. How do you guys subscribe to threads here? Trying to expand my base a bit to FT - but having a tough time figuring out how I can subscribe to threads to keep up to date and read the new posts.

PS -- I have an Android. Any help appreciated!
PSS -- I hit "Instant Email Notification" after I finish posting, but after I receive an email and I click on it to see what has been written it says you have been unsubscribed.

TIA!

danville 1K Feb 13, 2015 7:05 am

Go to your control panel, click on Messaging and Notification, and under Default Thread Description Mode pull down to Instant Email Notification.

ranhan429 Feb 13, 2015 10:18 am

yay - thanks!!

danville 1K Feb 14, 2015 5:25 am

You're welcome! And welcome to FT!

Also, anything you subscribe to will appear in your "MyFlyerTalk" (icon at the top right of most pages on FT, or here). In fact, I prefer to not subscribe by email (I get too many emails as-is) unless it's a thread with potentially urgent information) and simply subscribe with no email notifications; I then make MyFlyerTalk my first point of entry on FT each day.

Of course, I am usually checking FT 5+ times a day; if you rarely visit FT, you may prefer email notifications.

Where is instant notifications? I click on thread tools and don't see it, though it says I'm subscribed to the thread. I'd like to get email when a new post is posted in a certain thread which is what I imagine instant notification is (actually, that's what I thought subscribe was), but I don't see it anywhere.

Unsubscribe from the thread, then resubscribe. You will get to choose instant then.

You will not get a notification every time there is a new post; only the first new post generates a notification. When you go back and read the thread, it resets again.

Have you recently changed your email address on FT?

No. It has been the same address since I joined...and still no email updates today.

Did they just stop, or did you just notice that they had stopped? According to tech, we have not sent out daily notifications since 2012.

All of your subscriptions are set to "Daily" notification instead of instant.

I would recommend you change them to instant or weekly.

Paul

We must be talking about different things. Perhaps I'm not describing it properly. The default for subscribe is "daily update by email". I am not receiving those. I was receiving them up until April 12th.

Your subscriptions were set to daily notifications (you have 3000+ of them) which is the issue. Tech re-set them to instant notification, which means as soon as someone posts in there you will get a notification (but ONLY 1, until you check the thread). Let me know if this solves it.

I can imagine that many 10+ year active members have that and more. Nevertheless, still nothing. By the way, changing all the threads to instant notification would blow up my phone, if it worked, so I'd appreciate it if you could have tech reset them the way it was before.

If there is now a system limit on subscriptions, please let me know the number and I will cull through the older ones and remove the subscription to certain threads.

There's no limit, and there's essentially no difference between your old Daily notification and the Instant ones, except the timing. Dailies used to come in after midnight all at once, and Instant come in the *first* time someone posts in one of your subscribed threads since the last time you checked it (you will not get a notice each time someone posts there -- only the first time; it resets after you check it).

It's possible that your internet provider is denying them as spam.

Did you also check your gmail spam folder?

Subscription not working right

guys

i don't seem to get alerted on every new post on this thread
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/coupo...l#post24744143

For e.g. I didn't get any notification on the two new threads yesterday. Can someone help?

Thx

wharvey Apr 30, 2015 7:42 am

Had you visited the thread since your last notification? I find that I will no longer get a notification until I visit the thread after a previous notification. The system will not send you a notification every time a post occurs until you visit the thread (it is a kind of reset).

sam007 Apr 30, 2015 7:46 am

I did not. Is there a way to change this behavior?

IBobi Apr 30, 2015 4:41 pm

1. What type of notification do you have set for that thread?

2. Wharvey is right, if you have it set to "instant" you will only get 1 notification, regardless of how many posts were made there since you last checked.

3. Have you recently changed your email address on FT?

4. Best to use gmail and avoid AOL or yahoo, which sometimes block FT emails.

sam007 Apr 30, 2015 5:13 pm

threat tools -> subscribe to this thread is what I use
I'll have to follow no.2 i guess

Thx

After you do that, it asks what kind of notifications you want. You can't subscribe without choosing.

Old thread....

Ive always had instant notification to all subscribed threads...worked fine.

However I went on a month vacation and decided to stop notifications...so I went into control panel (my flyer tak) and from the ntofiication pull down selected "no email notification"

this had no effect- still getting instant emails to the 1300 threads Im subscribed to.

HOWEVER. is this the wrong setting??? Does this setting only control NEW subscriptions?

Should I instead go to the subscription page, select all, and change them all to 'no notification'???

Sorry if I missed this above....

Yes, the setting in the settings only affects new threads you reply to.

I'm not sure how to change the subscription settings for multiple threads at once--I've never tried. It looks like the solution you proposed (via the subscriptions page) should work, though.

Email thread updates

I have a subscription for daily activity updates on various threads, however, since a couple if days, I do no longer receive these emails, despite having re-registered. Is anyone else having the same trouble?

Missing subscription emails?

Has anyone been missing the subscription emails for the past week or so? The last set of subscription emails I got was May 4.

Nothing in the spam filter. I use Google Apps mail.

Mountain Explorer May 8, 2016 11:02 am

I also have not received daily subscription emails since May 4. I tried unsubscribing and re-subscribing but that didn't help. I'm still getting instant notifications.
