What's causing this thread is "I read X thread every day and now when I press the First Unread button, I am being taken somewhere I should not be."

I am working with the developers to determine if there is a difference in the code used in the previous version and this version that we are on now.

I'll update you with progress, and will ask for more information as needed. Thank you.

This. I only ever use this feature on threads I read often, or that I have read previously and want to catch the newest posts. I have never used it on threads that I have never visited before. That isn't the point. For those, I click on the thread title and start at the beginning.

For me, it is all about the threads I follow/read a lot. Clicking on that icon does not always work as it is supposed to - namely taking me to the first post following the last one that I have already read, sometimes just minutes or hours before.

Agree, same for all of us that are reporting this.

Hopefully they understand the problem finally and can concentrate on that. The clue is in the name "View First Unread" and strangely that is what I expect it to do! It works fine on many other fora I visit outside of FT and is a fundamental, basic feature these days. I truly cannot understand why this was so hard to understand but I couldn't care less so long as it is fixed.

I admire the fact that you all apparently have great memories, but I don't. I can't always remember if I've read a thread in the past, so I'd like the functionality to work correctly REGARDLESS of whether I've read a thread or not. If the code is (theoretically) able to know that it should take me to post #72, then it should also be capable of taking me to post #1.

If I have not read a thread at all, click on it, and then click "View First Unread" I go straight to the last entry on the last page. I am not sure that is correct either, but one step at a time in this case.

And I have threads that I always go back to so I am certain of the way it should work, and has worked. But I like it when someone says I have a great memory as I am beginning to wonder ! :)

When I click on the link to a thread that I have visited before, it takes me to Post #1.

When I click on View First Unread it takes me directly to the last post in the thread, bypassing posts that I have not previously read. Is that consistent with your experience?

Silver Fox Oct 26, 2016 12:48 pm

For the threads I am having a problem with, I click on the link to a thread that I have visited before, it takes me to Post #1, I click on View First Unread and it sometimes takes me to the bottom of the page, or will skip a few posts beyond where I know I have read. Some threads it works as expected.

Silver Fox Oct 27, 2016 1:17 am

Another thread where it is happening, should have taken me to post #9, took me to #11: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/omni/...l#post27397811

Here is one where it isn't working at all. I've gone to this thread a few times today when looking at the list of threads after clicking on ''new posts" in the blue search bar.

Clicking on the 'view first unread' icon takes me to the very first post in the thread. Every time, regardless of the fact that I have visited the thread 5 times already today. It has done this 4 times today - I have tried it each time there is a new post. I have read through the thread in full but each time, it takes me to post #1, not to the newest (unread) post.

Even clicking on the thread title and starting at post 1, then clicking 'view first unread' from there, it still keeps me at post #1. Just tried it now as there is another new post.

This thread, went to top of page 2 rather than post #6: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...nobody-ce.html

That all seems to be functioning correctly (with one caveat -- going to the bottom of an unvisited thread rather than the top...).

Remember, again -- the software cannot determine what *post* you read or did not read when last you visited. It will take you to the *page* that the next most recent post (since you last looked) resides on.

EXAMPLE:

(you have your settings to display 40 posts per page in this example)

If the last time you checked a thread, the most recent post was post #45 (this would put you on page 2 of the thread, since you view 40 posts per page), and you go back to the thread after there are 77 posts in that thread, it will take you to page 2 again (somewhere on page 2 -- there is no way for it to know where your eyes scanned or scrolled). If there are now 85, or 850 posts in the thread, it should still take you to page 2, since you never viewed past that page. But again, it may not take you to the exact post you last viewed, because it cannot track this.

In the above cases, it looks like it was taking you to the last page in a thread, either because you had never viewed the thread before (in which case perhaps it should take you to the beginning rather than the end, I agree -- but it does not seem to do this for me -- at least this is consistent), or because that's the page you had last viewed.

Another wrinkle can come into the situation if you *ever* use the "mark forums read" link, in which case hitting the "first new post" button will act as though you have read up to the last page in *every thread on FT*.

Sorry, it isnīt true. If I come back to a busy thread after a long time, FT returns me a couple of pages prior the end, not the next page after the page of the last post I had read.

This thread is an example - I followed a link, which puts me at page 2, for the first time here. I pressed the "View First Unread" button, it jumped me to page 5, not page 3.

In your example, if I was at post 77, and now the thread is at 850 posts, (22 pages, considering 40 posts per page), FT might put me at page 19 or 20, not page 3.

Finkface Nov 2, 2016 7:17 pm

Ok, so now it pretty much isn't working at all anymore. At least for me. When clicking on the icon, it either takes me to the very first post in the thread, or the very last, even if there are new posts within the past hour that I haven't read. If I try going to the start of a thread and clicking on the 'view first unread' from there it either a) does absolutely nothing and keeps me at the first post or b) again, takes me to the very end of the thread.

These are all threads that I read often, where there have been several new posts made since I last read the thread. This morning, it took me to the first post in a thread 100% of the time, even if the thread was years old with hundreds of already-read posts. It has morphed throughout the day into taking me to the end of every thread.

HMO Nov 3, 2016 9:06 am

For me it is still working, since Iīm not very late for the party (probably about 3 pages behind the last page)

Silver Fox Nov 8, 2016 12:31 am

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trust...l#post23037521 this thread has started doing it for me today.

Any news on this?

Silver Fox Nov 10, 2016 9:28 am

Anyone home? If you are then this thread:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...l#post27462360

takes me to the bottom of the page rather than post #3

This is really getting old now.

IBobi Nov 10, 2016 3:38 pm

We realize it's been going on for a while, but really, until I update you guys, it is being worked on I assure you. I just have no news.
