Thanks folks -- IBJoel will be following up.

Current thinking is that perhaps threads that have posts and threads merged into them may be breaking a little bit at the database level as far as the post counts. We are going to do some testing but it's tricky and time-consuming, and this is an edge case; so please be patient :)

I think that thinking is wrong, sorry. This very short, newly opened thread is doing the same for me right now: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...l#post27348738 as it is such a short one it might be a good one to start looking at.

And that's funny because that thread is working normally for me. I just tested it again now and it took me to the first unread post.

Even funnier is that for me it takes me here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/27348735-post9.html despite me having read beyond that.

This thread takes me to the last post not the first unread: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...l#post27352141

Finkface Oct 16, 2016 7:46 pm

This one doesn't work at all. Takes me to the very first post when I see there is a new post despite me having visited the thread about 3 times.

This thread http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...l#post27360167 takes me to the bottom of the page, last post, instead of the first unread.

If those still seeing the issue could help out with some specifics:
  • List the click by click steps you take from logging on until you have this issue
  • "I went to this page [link]"
  • "I clicked the [x]"
  • "I clicked the First Unread Post arrow HERE [screen shot]"
  • "I got taken to [x] instead of the first unread post"
  • "I previously did/did not use the Mark Posts Read link"

  • List the click by click steps you take from logging on until you have this issue: I've been logged on for weeks, so I can't respond to this part of your request.
  • "I went to this page [link]": http://www.flyertalk.com/ --> Forum pull-down menu/Hotels and Loyalty Programs --> http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/inter...mbassador-426/
  • "I clicked the [x]" http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/inter...ce-2016-a.html
  • "I clicked the First Unread Post arrow HERE [screen shot]" Blue box with the down arrow to the left of the words "Sticky Please post your Rewards Club Experience 2016." (This is odd, but apparently your cursor does not appear when taking a screen shot in Windows 10.)
  • "I got taken to [x] instead of the first unread post" http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/intercontinental-hotels-ihg-rewards-club-intercontinental-ambassador/1735474-please-post-your-rewards-club-experience-2016-a-5.html#post27348768
  • "I previously did/did not use the Mark Posts Read link" To the best of my knowledge, I have NEVER used the Mark Posts Read link and this is not a forum I can recall ever visiting

As the OP for this thread, I have had this problem since at least the middle of June.

And, this occurs in every thread, so it does not appear to be an aberration unique to the content of selected threads.

I have never been to the cited thread before.

When I clicked on the link, I was taken to post 10.

When I clicked View First Unread, I was taken to post 41 (I am set up to view 40 posts per page).

When I next clicked View First Unread, I was taken to the last post in the thread.

Scrolled up, clicked View First Unread, and was taken to last post in thread.

Do you ever use the "Mark Forums Read" link (under quick links)?
...

What is this link supposed to do?

When I click on it, it only displays the list of FT forums.

I have never used it before.

Not likely to use it, as it does not seem to provide any useful function.

There is no way for the feature to know what *post* you read or did not read on the page.

The best it can do is know how many posts there were the last time you checked a thread, and know what the last page in the thread was when you looked last.

Therefore, as far as the system is concerned, if you read post 13 on a 20-post thread, and you are viewing 20 posts per page, it's the same as if you reads all the way to the end -- post 20 -- and so it will take you there, because post 13 and post 20 are on the same page.

This is functioning correctly.
