I have had multiple popunders per session. Not to mention bogus advertising "you are the winner today" when it is nothing more then a cookie to I am not the winner again today.
I would be willing to pay to use the BBS, but keep these popups/unders and I am gone. |
They have all been "unders" but I have certainly had multiple ones - I have had Merrick Bank three or four times today now. Guess I have to go out and get some popup killer software now. Unbearable to have popups on a site I use so much. Popups are the most highly annoying form of advertising I have ever encountered. Its such a feeling of violating and causes a lot of ill will towards the entity which slams me with them.

I do not get them so they do not bother me. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
However I recall Randy posting a year or so back that pop-ups annoy him as much as anyone here and that he'd asked the vendor not to have them on FT? ------------------ ~ Glen ~ Come and visit the most ** FRIENDLY FORUM ** on FlyerTalk. I'd second the motion about paying a subscription to not have pop-up or pop-under ads.
I don't think I'm alone in this, either. Pop-(anything) ads are the most annoying type of advertising possible, and I'm saddened to see the IF/Webflyer/FT folks going down this road. Put an extra ad in the static HTML of threads or the like, but please lose the pop-up/pop-unders. ------------------ Saving the world, one clue at a time. |
Just got a popup ad that I didn't even notice at first.
I was in the UA forum and I got another browser window opened which was only about 1/18th the size of my screen. And since I was clicking in the main window when it came up I only noticed it upon closing my main browser window. I am sure, though, that it was from FT because FT was the only site I went to during the session and the ad had a picture of a plane or some such. |
Those having popups when reading FT might have some spyware on their PC that is causing the unwanted popups.
Download AdAware or PestControl (both free and easily found using Google) to clean your PC of that junk. |
Never mind, I am seeing pop-under ads today.
Ick. I recently read an article somewhere pointing out how effective text ads are when compared to popup/popunder and banner ads. It said that these ads have a far higher click-through than the other choices. One type of ad that is often done really well is the interstitial ads you see appearing on more sites these days. They are certainly more intrusive than any other type of ad, but they are often entertaining enough to overcome that. For all the companing people do about the intrusiveness of ads, I think 90% of the time the problem they really have is that the sponsors are lower-end, like late-night infomercials, instead of high-quality national advertisers with a significant level of creative effort invested in the impression. So, having rambled on about all of that (are you sorry you asked, Dan? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ), I'd say that I'd prefer to buy a subscription to flyertalk (ala slashdot's system that allows you to buy your way out of x ad pages) rather than deal with low-quality ads of any variety. With better ads, I wouldn't care. |

Aargh. These ads really are very annoying.
I, for one, make it a point of principle not to buy anything from a vendor who advertises using pop-ups/unders. |
Double aargh.
FlyerTalk Spam! I get the popups with every change (from forum to forum, individual message to forum, etc.). Help! I don't know how to turn them off and would love more details about how to do that. |
Thanks for all the feedback on these... I'm sending it on to our Ad people and Randy. Sorry about the multiple occurences; from what we've been told, they shouldn't be behaving that way.

So, thanks! [This message has been edited by robb (edited 03-11-2003).] |
Add one to the group that'd be happy to pay for a site that's ad-free. I don't think I'd be as philosophically opposed as I am yo pop-ups if the content was't so lame and outright condescending.
This 'PC Performance Wizard' claims to be able to optimize my PC's performance. Ok, Oh Godly Javascript-based-popup, I'm using Redhat 6.2 with Gnome/Sawfish and a 2.4 series kernel that has custom patches and kernel modules. Optimize _that_ (and have fun trying to install the requisite spyware while you're at it). I do not gamble. I'm happy with my abs. I like my kernel and/or registry exactly as they are. I do not need another credit card (do the ones your company is hawking even offer miles or points) ? And finally, I do not need a furry purple animal watching my every move as I traverse the net. |
